Thanks Dan. I love the finish on your bass. I have a few Gretsches but the one in the photo is the one I keep out on the stand. It’s a limited silver falcon with a 16” body (opposed to 17”) I think only 35 were made.

Thanks, Michael! That silver falcon is a stunner.

I've also got a cheaper Dean Stylist upgraded w/ TV Jones ThunderTrons, seen here w/ f hole covers because it will howl at the moon at the slightest hint of volume. The Gretsch, being a thinner hollow body, never feeds back.

Nice! I’ve heard of guys stuffing their hollow bodies full of socks to try tame feedback in some guitars. I love TVJ pickups. I am unfamiliar with how good their bass pickups are but I can say their guitar pickups are a massive upgrade in clarity compared to stock Gretsch filtertrons.

I’ve been out of the music gear game for a while now. I am too focused on working and saving for my wife’s first Rolex!

Looks like if TRF had a band we'd have 15 guitarists, two keyboard players, two drummers, plus only one percussionist and squeezbox player.

Oh my God!
What unbelievably beautiful photos! It suits musicians to wear Rolexes. I want to take such a photo of a watch with my piano, too. But I recently moved and my piano hasn't been delivered to me yet. I already can't wait for the guys from move-pianos.ca to deliver my favorite instrument. I will finally be able to play, take photos, and record videos. My Instagram will just fill up with content.

I was really amused by bassist Dan's comment, lol. It's good to be a bassist ;)

10000% agreed. Frankly, all you need is a solid bassist and drummer deep in the groove. The other players are just fluff.

Warming up for a gig a couple of weeks ago. Decided to wear the Daytona. :)
Since retirement I've been playing in a bunch of bands. This gig was my band.

If you're in the Seattle area I'll be playing in Factoria tomorrow night with a different band. More dance/pop stuff.

My band is more of a soul-jazz fun/r&b project. Glad to see so many musicians here!

Here’s one from a gig last September. I couldn’t believe I played three hours of keyboards while wearing it, but it held up great.

Any of you New Yorkers (and out of towners too) are welcome to come by the studio: www.theiceplant.com.

Wow.

First, in over twenty years of using that user name, I think you’re the first person to know the reference! That alone just made my day (and yesterday was a tough one, so I needed it).

Second, there was sadly no Tower of Power played at that gig. It was three straight hours of Led Zeppelin. I did play The Rain Song on a modern Mellotron.

Thirds, while I have a real B3 from ‘57 (I think), with all the service records and the preset stickers intact (it would make a watch collector proud), I have never even attempted to learn the pedals. Sometimes we get a real organ player (you know what I mean) in the studio and I watch in awe as they go all octopus on my rig.

Where are you playing in that photo?

Am totally in awe of the original B3, and yes it makes me proud.

Yeah, we're the Rodney Dangerfield of the band. Steven, you must be a bass player, cause your timing is impeccable. My band is currently in the studio laying down rhythm tracks. Gotta get that foundation built first.

Our current recording project will feature, for the first time for us, a legendary regional jazz icon, Steve Schmidt. Many years ago when Count Basie was too sick to perform at a concert in Indy [2 hours away], they called Steve to fill his shoes. Can't wait to hear his extraordinary B3 riffs on our tunes.

Dan, that's waaaaay cool. Studio time in the 1980s in Miami was... interesting. But yeah, drummers are nearly always the clowns of the band. Let's face it, no other mainstream musician works harder physically than we do. Singers... pptfptfptf... and lead guitarists get to m'bate nearly every song during their 'solo bit'. Without a great backbone of drums and bass the rest generally is just 'fill'.

Congrats on scoring Steve!

I've been so blessed for the past 20 years playing w/ a drummer who is the perfect blend of Jim Keltner & Steve Ferrone. Besides having a groove the depth of the Grand Canyon and chronometer certified timing, he is also a sweetheart of a guy who always brings the positive, never the negative.

No doubt a great rhythm section requires a certain mindset and somewhat less ego massage [in most cases], not to mention it's the best seat in the house.

glad to have evoked a positive response! I'd pay to sit in with TOP for a song or two. Hope everything worked out.

That B3 sounds epic - nothing like a B3/Leslie with someone working the bars and pedals. All original with service records and stickers - unicorn!

Now I need to look for a Mellotron patch on my EWI - thanks for the reminder. What a cool sound. Haven't touched it in a while but busted it out to look for the ARP patch so we can play "Summer Madness"

That pic is from a cool little brewery called "Peace of Mind Brewing". One of the owners made this graphic for our show. Super cool and creative guy.

@Dan Pierce @ enjoy the music - nothing like having a bass player and the drummer in the pocket. That is the foundation.

I used to do a 2 man gig with a guitar player who sang and had a bunch of sequenced songs. The money was really good but it just wasn't as fun as playing with real musicians and I had a good day job so I did that for a summer and that was it.

I've posted this before but had to match the shirt and shades with the BLNR.

Great thread.

Lovely to see some artistic input..... I do get a bit bored of pictures of watches which mostly just look like any other Rolex.

Does anyone play bongos here (genuine question)?

My best mate was a Soul/Jazz/house DJ and he was also great on the bongos. He passed away recently and I have bought some and want to learn to play them like he did.
My first very basic question is; are bongos played specific 'notes' or is it just a feeling/interpretation of the music?
