16710 GMT Master II. The most versatile Rolex ever?

As many of us do, collections grow and shrink, pieces become an infatuation, you buy it you like it then you sell it in the quest for the next 'grail' and the cycle continues. In 2004 the first Rolex I bought was a 16710LN, at the time I struggled deciding between the Submariner date and the GMT. Eventually I bought the GMT with black insert for £2300 from John Dyson in Leeds. Loved it wore it now and then and some years later traded it for a Sea-Dweller. In the last 18 years I have owned 6 GMT Masters mostly 16710's but there was a 1675 and a 16750 amongst them. It has now become my decision that for modernity and function that the 16710 is my favourite version and possibly my favourite Rolex!

A couple of weeks ago I picked this 2005 16710 up. It a cracker, full set, was originally a 16710LN but was fitted with a nice Pepsi. Since. getting the watch I have added an all black bezel insert, and red & black insert and a brand new old stock jubilee 62510H with the GMT correct 502T end links. Along with an Oysterflex and a hand made leather strap and a couple of NATO's this must now be the most versatile watch ever. So many variations and combinations for any occasion. I really am struggling to justify having any other watch. I'll leave you with some photos.

Yep; it's arguably the most versatile Rolex reference ever.

It's weird being the same age as old people.

The 16710 is the most versatile for sure, and also the best balance between vintage and modern. I love mine!!!

I bought mine in 2002 new from Cottrills Of Bramhall for £2300. My wife had seen a no date Submariner in the window whilst shopping with her mum in the morning. I returned with her in the afternoon only to be told that somebody had bought it but they had a new 16710 in stock. My first Rolex. The rest is history!

Pretty similar to myself in some respect, in so far as I traded a 16710 for a Seadweller (16600) some time ago but ultimately regretted it. Was lucky via the same supplier, to pick up another from 2007. Love the watch and would not let it go again. I was also fortunate to land a 16700 which I would also recommend to anyone considering going for one. Again, a superb watch and like the 16710, totally versatile! The irony is that back then, the 16710 was going for less than the Seadweller, and there were plenty to be had. Seems that the 16710 has really taken off since though with some really high prices!

Yes, it's one of the most versatile, and also one of the most strikingly 'handsome' watches Rolex has ever made! I purchased this Z-serial 16710 new in 2008 (and regrettably sold it 6 years later). Sometimes you just don't appreciate the full beauty of a watch until it's gone, lol. On vacation in the Florida Keys..

At the peak of my collecting, I had eight Rolex pieces. The 16710 is the only one that now remains.

There is no question that's its the most versatile watch Rolex ever made (this coming from a sub wearer). Its also far more versatile than the much shiner new versions. The larger lugs, blingy bezels, and pastels make for more wrist presence making it less versatile unfortunately.

Most modular? Sure thing. Most versatile? I’d probably say a simple DJ on an Oyster bracelet would be the most versatile in use.
