Montegrappa extra Otto Sapphirus lapis lazuli
Here’s another one from the past year I’ve been off. 1 of 192 in reference to the chapters in the book of the dead. The first Montegrappa pen made of rock. There’s a lot of details that I don’t have, but it has a carbon fiber core and a wafer thin Lapis Lazuli skin. Plating is standard issue Montegrappa. All the high field edges flake off. Compared to my Malachite extra Otto, this one isn’t cursed and didn’t actually draw blood. The Lapis Lazuli is flawless in form. There’s a fair amount of pyrite and calcium inclusions. In my research on Lapis Lazuli quality, this is not completely ideal. Reference Tutankhamun‘s mask. No calcium, no pyrite. Just blue. This doesn’t necessarily bother me because I like the calcium figuring and the pyrite sparkle. The pen writes perfectly out of the box. I didn’t have to, or felt the need to, adjust anything. Montegrappa’s nib smith did great work on this one. My malachite pen, no. Same #8 nib. Love this pen though. The lapis lazuli is a much brighter blue than Visconti’s Il Magnifico.
