I am a customer there (as I am a French citizen). I have bought some pieces at the Paris Salon, including one grand complication. I was told that nowadays hard to get/hot pieces are reserved for local residents (and for instance it's now impossible to get any aquanaut/nautilus without a prior purchase). So what they told to your friend is correct.
By the way I know someone who used to buy in both Geneva and London salons and this person was told to buy only in London now (at least for pieces that are not only limited edition to the Geneva salon).
