For the deposit, it depends on your relationship with your AD. My AD doesn't ask for a deposit, but I often pay the money in advance. Maybe I'm stupid, but I like to have it all paid for.
I'm also working on a cash budget these days instead of credit cards, when possible, so I'm a bit strange.
