It’s understandable if you don’t go. I personally wouldn’t. If they are good friends they will appreciate the honesty. What people don’t like are fake excuses.
We are religious, and over the years we have declined wedding invitations and birthday party invitations of good friends who scheduled their events conflicting with major religious holidays. We just give the reason without any apology.
