I didn't know, back when I had a business that it was illegal to play my playlist in the background of my business. I was essentially making money indirectly from the songs that were playing.

If you have a party where you charge money, you legally can't play someone's songs without permissions, or royalties paid.

Even MUSAK or elevator music existed because rigid copyright laws prevented them from licensing and rebroadcasting original recordings, so they hired their own orchestras to record non-vocal versions of current hits. They could have never afforded to exist if they paid for the original recordings.
As a musician & songwriter music licensing is worse than falling off a bike.
