I can see another explanation: it's a peeling of the gold plated surface, when the end links corners touch the watch. Logically, the bracelet and the watch are made from the same material (and same density), gold, so those points must be polished and not scratched.
But any way, an case opening at the local AD must give you the true answer, after all, I saw some stolen watches with the new serial engraved again (but here it's a model number as well
)
