I don't get the sense that the list ever moves. I've been on it for 2 years for an Explorer II and not a dickey bird from the AD. Assuming I never will hear from them so I bought a second hand watch from a forum member.

I review the classifieds on RF daily for prices. Also take a look at the major grey dealers online. It is not uncommon for me to see a range of 10%-20% from the highest to lowest price for same model. In many instances I see a variance of 25% between reputable sellers here on RF and some of the major grey dealers (even some grey dealers that also sell on here). I have been disregarding posts in classifieds from sellers with little to no history.

How do you all benchmark prices in order to determine the deal in front of you?

To be clear, I am not looking for a "deal". Just want the piece at a fair market price.

Thanks!
Check out the reputation area here. There are plenty of scams or sellers that may not know what they bought. Trust is so important. Anyone could post pictures of something different than what you get.

Once you narrow down who you’ll buy from, the delta may not be as large.

Moda attempts to run like an auction and the vetting is interesting. Watches often lack a lot of standard info when posted and no one asks and the bidding takes off? Also, the top 3 bids are binding? I’ve seen several additional odd things. I saw a few watches reappear with a new seller and the same photos in 24-48hrs. I’m not brave enough to buy 20-30k watch on Facebook. I don’t see big name dealers on there often unless I’m just missing them? Interesting to look at but that’s all.

I was in that group back when it was still growing, when there were only a thousand or two members before the behemoth it eventually became.

Back then it was more "B2B" than it is today, where the main group is chiefly just dealers selling to the public, or if there's a deal to be had, a price where a dealer pounces on it immediately. Today, most of the full-time dealers join the subscription based group and the margins are a little better.

In either case, it's still useful to gauge pricing/valuation over, say, Chrono24.

Watchrecon.com is another good one.
