Vintage Datejust crown positions

I inherited a vintage Datejust that I believe is non-quickset, and I am trying to figure out what the second crown position is for. When I unscrew the crown and it pops out into the first position, I understand this is for winding the mainspring. And when I pull it all the way out into third position, I can adjust the time accordingly. But what is the middle position (#2) for on a non-quickset. In this position, the second hand continues to move and there is resistance when I turn the crown, but nothing happens. What is this position for? Thanks in advance!

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere. I have searched online and can’t find the answer. Trying to avoid another trip to the jeweller for a silly question.

It will help a lot if we know what model you have.

Datejust 16013. Early 80s, maybe late 70s.

That watch has 3035 movement and does have a quick set date. Perhaps there is a broken part and the watch needs service.

Should be the detent for quickset date and only changes in one direction. Could be something as simple as a lack of lubrication allowing the parts to move into position. Likely a good clean, lube, and adjustment service will put it back in order.

Thanks for the info. To my surprise and pleasure, it is a Quickset Date. I just had to turn counterclockwise to change the date.

Before I realized this, I had been turning the crown clockwise in position 2 and it met with resistance, similar to winding but perhaps a little more resistance. Could this have damaged the movement?
