Help me pick classical songs for our wedding violinist...please!

So I've picked all the fun classic rock type covers from that list and now I need help sorting through the classical music.

Anyone see any standouts?

Your help is much appreciated

Canon - Pachalbel, all day every day, Tom! One of my favourite pieces of classical music (either that or Hall of the Mountain King). We had it at our wedding and it's an awesome piece of music

Thanks! I think that's the brides choice for her entrance. Seems like a must

We had it walking back down the aisle after the service. Have a listen first to see what you think but it really is awesome

I like the Flower duet, Barcarolle, Intermezzo by Mascagni, and Mozart's Sull'Aria, all beautiful melodies that most will recognise. Wedding March must be Wagner, always Wagner.

Solo violin, right? "Meditation" from the opera Thais, by Jules Massenet. Right after the vows.

Those feature in Shawshank, Life is Beautiful and Raging Bull and I'd also add my favourite modern piece, James Horner's For the Love of a Princess.

Excellent gents! Really appreciate all the help. While I appreciate classical music...I'm not well versed.

It's got nothing to do with you, you're just the bloody Groom for goodness sake.

Leave this sort of thing to the Bride and her family/friends.

All you have to do is to turn up well dressed and sober.

Regards

My advice is to let your violinist choose the music. Most professional musicians should be able to read the room and choose the appropriate pieces. And they will always produce a better performance playing music they are more familiar with.

That works perfectly felt well while guests are coming in and seating. It doesn't work well if you plan to include the music in your program as many people do.

Good advice

I have several professional classical musicians (violin x2 and harp) in the family and this is what they do. The interview will set the parameters and the musician will recommend the music that fits their scheme and the venue. Like many things, music is better left to the professionals.

This is a solo violinist, not a quartet or an orchestra. The repertoire will be limited to what sounds good for a violin in their venue. If they want something more complex, they'll need to pipe it in there.

The violinist provided the list of music, which means the bride and groom can choose what they want played at their own wedding. If he/she was going to limit it based on the acoustics of the venue, I don't think they would be holding the list. And unless they're getting married in an office filled with sound deadening material, a violin's sound carries quite well and they can amp it if needed.

To reiterate what I said earlier, some people like to include the music being played in their program - which again, wouldn't be possible if you gave the violist the choice to play what they want. But above all, I sure as hell wouldn't pay any musician to play what they wanted me to hear, especially at my own wedding. Its a wedding, not an open mic session

I don't think you're giving the musician any credit for being a professional and subject matter expert. You aren't hiring a garage band for your kegger, you're hiring someone who does this for a living and is focused on providing a memorable experience that generates good word of mouth.

I give musicians a lot of credit which is why they are hired but they are employed to provide a service. Part of that service is to play what I want played. This violinist is also in agreement, hence the song list.

If the bride and groom want to give the violist the freedom to choose the music for them, I'm sure they are more than qualified to do so. Otherwise, the person paying chooses from the repertoire (song list) they provided.

This was my initial thought. I think I will suggest a handful and leave the rest up to her.
