Thoughts on 5980

So I own this watch. Really like the watch. But it's a hair small on me. I'm 6'4". And the 40mm size is a tad small. Thought about trading it in but where do you think the future values of this piece are going? Is it still desirable on the secondary market or has the 5990 or other nautilus pieces become more popular?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

5980 is a great piece.

No threat from 5990, very different watches.

Great watch...I've owned a few and even completed another. As for future values, that's anybody's guess but this is a piece that was regular production and around for several years so I doubt it will be one that goes on a tear. I assume it may rise with the price of pateks over time but nothing to write home about. If you don't really get much use out of it I wouldn't think twice about letting it go and getting something else. Just my .02 :)

5980 is very desirable and a great watch. Steel versions are discontinued so finding a new one isn't easy. If you have a mint or excellent condition piece selling it or trading it should be easy. $51000 was the last retail price.

I really like all 5980 variations. I'm sure you could sell it if you decided to move on to something different

Mine is mint- good shape. Have owned it about a year- I wear it on a rotation so by no means have I not enjoyed it but just thinking of moving on from it. Hypothetical- would you trade for this? 42mm and a chrono that I love. Anything like this in a Patek is 150k which is not something I want to do right now:

Not that specific watch - it's just a google image but a vacheron chrono. They run about 40k

Other watches I own-

5905 (incoming)
5135
Ap Safari
Ap bumblebee
Carl Bucherer x2 - just a couple of pieces I bought on a whim. Like em- would sell em but they drop like a rock so I just keep em.

Btw- I know selling it won't be difficult- but question is would you make the trade suggested above based on my other pieces?

OH NO, keep at least the Nautilus, except if you want to get another one, but don't trade for the one above or another like it, about being worth 150K in Patek, don't think so, the 5070P is quite a lot but that's it, it is one reference only, you can't compare the VC with the 5070 IMO

Not comparing vc to 5070. Just debating 5980 and moving on from it. The vc caught my eye. I like the look of the chrono and I think I'm not liking the bracelet. I think I prefer a leather strap.

Lange is on my list. But isn't it smaller? Like 39mm?

Also twice the cost? Trying to reasonable with the watch. Already blew a bunch on 5905 and have a vehicle coming later this year that I want to save cash for.

The old dato was 39, the newer one is 41. They are expensive new.

if you don't like the bracelet and don't wear it sell, but it's a pity if it's the case

You can get a 5070g (Lemania), which is the predecessor to the 5170. Or you can go with the 5170 (in house movement), which itself is stunning. Martin's and Gus' 5170s both are spectacular. The 5070 wears bigger at 42mm, FYI.

What about a zeitwork?

Very different watch from the manual wind chronos, but a very interesting watch and it definitely has presence.

My 5980 is one of my favorites but I have said and done, if it's not being worn and enjoyed, it's time to find a new owner and get something you will enjoy.

Zeitwerk, 41 Dato and AP ROO are all good options for a larger wrist.

5070 - bezel is really big. Not loving that particular piece. Ideal watch would be 5970. It has the right face.

I think I'm gonna sit tight till me 5905 rolls in later this month and evaluate after that. I've got my 5980 on right now and it's pretty. :)

Btw- noticing not a lot of love for the Vacheron on this forum. More ALS fans here.

It's one of my favorite reference. If too small for you along same price try 44 Offshore, RM 11? For dress watch, 5070?

I have 2 RO Offshores. Dont want a 3rd. Will continue to wait for my 5905 and then decide if Im going to keep the 5980 or trade in for a chrono of some sort- maybe a lange- maybe a vacheron. maybe another patek.

My AD called me a few months ago with an opportunity to get a 5524 Pilot. I passed on it and regret that now. Larger watch with leather.

Pilot has grown on me but I wouldn't pay the premium now to buy in the secondary market. That being said, it is nothing like the piece you had mentioned in your original post (or any others referenced). Sounds to me like you're a bit indecisive at the moment and maybe itching for a change. Been there before...countless times! I think your plan of getting the new Patek first and then determining what the next acquisition would be is probably the smartest move. If you haven't tried on a 5070 I'd highly encourage you to try one on...one of my favorite pieces (full disclosure I have one for sale BUT only because I want to move the funds into a 5070p). Best of luck in whatever you decide!
