When does it go “Vintage”

What is the consensus at TRF when a Rolex transfers to the vintage side?

Is there a specific date or when the model has been updated a few times?

Answer: If the watch is more than half your age and you have been wearing it since new.

(and you thought there wouldn't be any math involved here?)

If you, the owner, call it and believe it is vintage, then it is vintage.

About the same time it gets "old".

OP:

In the world of collectibles, in general, vintage starts at 30 years and antique starts at 100 years...

Hope that helps...

PS: Somewhere out there are some "antique" Rolexes!

Vintage comes from French Vingt Age. We do call vintage if more than 20 years.

I’d consider tritium dial Rolex to be vintage at this point. 25 years now in most models. If it was a car it could wear an antique tag.

Uh, no. Its etymology is derived from, originally, the Latin word “Vinum” (wine/grape).

It’s not me saying so. It’s what it is. I was simply correcting your error. Apologies if you took offense.

Source - Merriam-Webster:

“Middle English, probably alteration of vendage, from Anglo-French vendage, vendenge, from Latin vindemia grape-gathering, vintage, from vinum wine, grapes + demere to take off, from de- + emere to take”

Yes please, don't take it personally, as you are well aware of, French, Italian, Castellano, Catalan, Galician and for this matter my mother language - Portuguese - are "latin languages", so the root of most of our words is Latin.

Thanks for chiming in, Filipe. And, of course, you are correct.
The greater point I was, apparently, not-so or perhaps too-subtly, trying to make, was that the word vintage has nothing to do with the number 20.
But, you’re right, we’re all here for a common passion and love of these ridiculously cool watches.

Cheers

Just to ad something to this TD I'll say that should be consider Vintage something that "represent the high quality of a past time",
so should not be only age but should also be considered the quality of the watch, otherwise is just hold...
Not an easy task , considering how subjective is the view of a 30/40/50 years watch

I'd say it's relative to your age. I bought my first Rolex (16610LN) new from AD when I got my first college degree in 1997. I feel it's just hitting vintage. However, 24 years from now my guess is that I won't consider the 124270 I picked up last year vintage because how fast I perceive the years to be going by now.

When your elderly watchmaker says: "I haven't seen one of these in decades. I'm not sure I have the parts nor can I do a full service. "

When they stop liking it and talking about it on the main “Rolex General Discussion” TRF forum…
