Anyone drive a Tesla 3?

On my short list to replace an Audi A4. Other nominees welcome.

I have a 3 and a Y. Y is more spacious and currently qualifies for federal rebate. Only the performance 3 qualifies right now but updated 3 is pretty nice. Great cars. Not having to spend time getting gas and very little maintenance are my fav parts. $50-100 a week on gas is not something i'll ever want to go back to.

I have a CyberTruck reservation but timing isn't right to complete that order. Bummer.

Model Y owner here. What would you like to know? Honestly once you switch to an EV there is no going back.

RAV4 Prime owner here … plug in hybrid is the best of both worlds (for me).

I get approx 85km of electric only range. If I run out, it switches seamlessly to gas (regular unleaded).

Depending on your daily drive this is a worthy option

Just get one.
I have never looked at a car in the same way again.
It’s the same for anyone else who tries…
I see gas cars as sad antiques, now.

Coming from an Audi; You'll be impressed by the performance, tech and convenience. You'll be saddened by the comfort and finish. Choose what's most important to you, as it's certainly a compromise.

I had an Audi. And a BMW.
I don’t miss the buttons and bits. I do love the airy, relaxed, clean cabin in the 3.
It’s got everything I need and I haven’t missed a single thing the older cars had.
I see a car as a functional thing now, not a moving indulgence.

make sure you qualify for the tax credit if it'd impact your decision.

EV ownership is pretty different. Road trips require some planning, you need to have at-home charging (ie don’t live in an apartment and depend on a supercharger), if you qualify for tax rebates buying new is a great deal but if you don’t qualify buying used may make more sense financially. With EVs software matters a lot more than hardware, so pick the car with the software that you like.

If you ask me some time ago, I would recommend Polestar 2, if ...
(1) you can live with service department (may) be far away from you
(2) you can live with the space inside. Its "OK" for a family of 4. But it feels quite a bit smaller than Model 3 on the inside.
(3) you would like to be able to find your car much easier than a Model 3 in a Costco parking lot. There are so many Tesla here that people do tried to getting into the wrong car.

I found Polestar 2 to ride and drive better than the (old) Model 3. I like the styling much better than Model 3 (personal preference), and it has Apple car play.

BUT ...
(1) you can't beat the Tesla charging network for road trip, or just about anywhere. Charging on Electrify America network is pretty bad, at least 65% of the time. Being crowded, stations not working, long line.
(2) can Polestar (as a company) survive? Look at their stock price.
(3) I don't think they qualify for Fed EV incentives now for purchase.

If I am buying an EV now, Tesla Model 3 Performance or Model Y is hard to beat. I would also be interested the Hyundai Ionic 5, maybe the N since they can fake an engine and transmission respond. Or Porsche Tycan used for under $70k? Audi eTron for under $45k?

I dunno man, I’ve driven every Tesla minus the truck. Had a buddies new model 3 for a few days when he had my car. It felt like cheap plastic toy. If you drive a lot, it’s a great gas saver. Very very quick, absurdly quick. But outside of that, I’m not into it. I will say the seats might be the most comfortable seats I’ve ever sat on, in any car. Better than the s560, better than any nice suv, they are incredibly comfortable.

Get the new model 3 performance that just came out. Mine should be here early june.

2.9 second 0-60 and a badass looking tesla for under $55,000 plus a tax credit of $7500? no brainer

For me as well - just went to plug-in hybrid. I chose the Volvo XC60 Recharge Black Edition. About the same pure dc range.

I make long trips once a month when the hybrid is key. 455hp combined mode.

The remainder of the time around town I'm on the dc motor only.

Why don't you rent one from Hertz or Turo for a day?

I'm not a fan of the interiors. Interesting comment above regarding the seats. I've always thought the seats were substandard on Teslas, but I have never sat in a model 3.

I would avoid a Taycan. Buddy of mine works at a Porsche dealer and they are always in for service. Plus their range is terrible. They look great though.

I love my Model Y. Don't regret it. Everything works perfectly. I charge at work for free and at home. I have saved around 3k on gas thus far. If I were in the market for a more expensive vehicle I would go with the R1S or R1T from Rivian. My father is looking at getting into one this weekend. If you want to stick with a luxury sedan that is more traditional I would go with the i4.

How is the regenerative breaking on these plug-ins? Does it bring you to a complete stop?

You can definitely feel it slowing you down but it won’t bring you to a complete stop.

Honestly, I think that’s a little safer than some EVs. So, on my MY, I use the full regen. However, my reactions to the brake are a tad slower than I used to be when driving my ICE vehicle. Also, what's your range loss in the winter? I was averaging 20% this winter with winter tires. However, on days it was -30 degrees with the windchill, I hit 30%.

Last question: I assume you charge from home? If so, what is your setup? I have the Tesla Universal wall connector. It was about 2k CAD to set up. But I can get 12 kw at home.

I’d say it loses about 20% in winter. I’m lucky in that I only drive about 100 km a week so I’m only charging once or twice a week.

I just use the good ole 110 volt charger that came with the car. It take about 11 hours from empty

That’s fairly decent range loss. I believe plug-in hybrids are a fantastic alternative for most. Hopefully, more manufacturers move to them. Everything in Waterloo is quite close. If it isn’t broke don’t fix it.

What is your fuel economy in gas mode?

I traded in my old Prius for a new one this year. I don’t drive nearly as much as I used to. At 55 mpg for the standard Prius the ROI on the plug in would be after I buy the next one.

I should preface and say that the one i drove for a few days, my buddy is 6”3 like 330 so maybe they were extra broken in .

I started leasing a 3 back in December. I really like the car but I just use it as my run around town car. We have a couple other ICE vehicles. I charge at home.

The 3 is really fast and handles nice. Very comfortable and I like all the tech stuff.

I'm not convinced yet of having an EV as an only car. I have not taken any road trips with it and really don't plan to.

The hardest part about buying my first Prius 20 years ago was being seen in a Prius. They were absolutely fugly for most of their existence. And the looks I got from people were not charitable. But, the price was right for a very reliable high fuel economy depreciating asset. It’s easier to get past what it is when the math works out so well.

My new Prius is shockingly handsome in comparison to the others. It’s a respectable car.
