TRF Golfers...what irons do you use?

I've been craving a new/used set of irons for quite some time.

My original set of golf clubs was stolen in Sacramento back in 2001.

My parents replaced my set with a generic Wilson set, and since then I have picked up random clubs here and there, slowly phasing out the Wilsons and replacing them with a plethora of clubs.

Driver - Taylormade R7 Burner
Fairway wood - Adams Tightlies
4 Iron - Callaway X18
5 Iron - Wilson
6 Iron - Ping i3 Blade
7 Iron - Wilson
8 Iron - Wilson
9 Iron - Ping Eye 2
48 degree - Cleveland CG11
52 degree - Cleveland Tour Action
54 degree - Cleveland CG10
56 degree - Cleveland CG10
58 degree - Cleveland CG10
Putter - Ping Anser2i

From all the research I've done, the Ping Eye 2 Beryllium Copper Irons are one of the finest set of clubs ever made.

Do any members here have any experience with them, and can attest to their greatness?

I feel like it might be more economical to just scoop up some random used 5,7,8 irons to complete my set, rather than go out and buy a full new or used set for $400.

What clubs are you all using?

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I have a set of Callaway clubs. You should have a feel of which brand you like since you have been golfing with the different ones. If the Ping feels the best in your hand, then I would replace the other clubs with Ping. I would go with what feels the best and not what is suppose to be the best.

Well, it's not even that I hit my Wilson wedges poorly, but they are just so horribly constructed...The ferrule rides up the shaft all the time...

I don't think that the equipment necessarily makes the golfer, but I want to rule crappy equipment completely out of the question. If I have "proper" clubs, I cannot blame them for my poor play

That said, I am absolutely in love with my Cleveland wedges. I play with 5 different wedges because I love using them for accurate shots from whatever distance I need without having to adjust my swing speed as much.

I'll see what I can find, I don't mind having a mixed bag of clubs!

Ping Eye 2 irons
G5 driver
Hogan Apex hybrid 4 wood
BeCu ping B51 putter

Have been using the Eye 2's since the late 90's, and tried a lot of other sets, but always went back to the Eye 2's.

I also have a set of Ping ISI BeCu irons, which have great feel, but are not as forgiving as the SS Eye 2's.

Re the BeCu Eye 2's, they are EXCELLENT clubs. I played a few rounds with a set I wanted to buy (somebody bought them out from under me), and loved them. BUT, they are soft, soft, soft. They wear fairly quickly, and will dent when they bang into one another. My ISI's just sit in a corner now, as I don't want to beat them up, and I like the sole weighting on the Eye 2's better.
If you can get a set of BeCu Eye 2's in good condition for a good price, go for it. Don't get gouged, though.

Try the stainless Eye 2's first, before you drop the $$ on the BeCu set. If you look around, you can probably get a stainless set for $200-$300, and get all your $$ back out of them if you don't like them.

Calloway X-16 irons, Assorted Calloway woods and Driver. But, it is the Indian, not the arrows.

Magique irons here with G. Loomis shafts (1999 models). Solid performers and reasonably priced.

And I still can't blame them for my lack of golf skill......

They first came out in the early 80s, and are still used on the tour today.

One of the best selling irons set of all time.

My dad had a set that was stolen, luckily he broke his 9 iron and it was laying around in the den. I took it off his hands and had it re-shafted.

I'm not sure if I want a full set or not, and if I want to go steel or be/cu, but we'll see.

I remember the Pings but did not recognize the Ping Eye 2. I thought the Ping Eye 2 was a new version of them.

I played with Ping Beryllium Copper Irons in the 1990s, nice fancy looking clubs, but really heavy, "old school". For the past ten years, playing with my trusty old Ping Zings.

I made 3 equiptment changes that took me from a 18 to a 10 literally within weeks.

Taylor made r7 Irons bent to fit my stance by a pga cert pro
nike sasquatch 480 driver with stiff diamana shaft( not the crappy stock shaft)
Cobra 7 wood. This club is like cheating. every time I hit it it goes right where I aim it 205-215 yards

I collect Pings, but play Cobra FP irons, Cobra woods and hybrid, Vokey wedges, and Scotty Cameron putter.

Ok, golfers of TRF. I have a question. My daughter is starting to take up golf so I am going to start golfing again. I have a set of Callaway golf clubs, probably around 20 years old. Boy, time sure flies as you get older! Anyway, I will probably buy a new set of golf clubs. What's suppose to be the best golf clubs nowadays? Pings, TaylorMade, Callaway or xxxx and which model? What do you recommend?

Thanks
Allan

Allan, head down to a local golf shop and hit some balls, and try a few brands out. Believe it or not, there is a book that tells you how forgiving a club head is, the higher the number, the more forgiving and the better you should score....I'd be curious what your 20 year clubs rank!

I bought a set while doing some work in Minneapolis. I walked into a used golf store, saw them, and forced myself to pick them up and ship them home (wouldn't fit in the overhead bin of the plane...). Never regretted the buy since.
