On February 13th, 1866 at 2:00 PM two men....

...from the James gang entered this bank, ask change for a $20, and then promptly robbed the establishment for $60,000 in cash and gold. The equivalent in today's money is around $4,000,000. The bank closed due to lack of funds!

It was the first daylight bank robbery in American History. Frank James, Cole and Jim Younger were involved and it launched the career of one of the great legends of the American west. Sadly one 17 year old young man was hit by a stray bullet and killed. There are a couple of bullet holes still visible in the brick just under the Museum sign.

My son and I spent the morning visiting this great museum and brushing up on our James history. All of this happened about 20 minutes from my home.

This part of Missouri is full of history as it was home to Jesse and Frank James as well as the Youngers. It was a great day!

Another interesting fact. The safe you see in the photos is actually 4 inches wider than the door at it's narrowest point. IOW, the building was built around the safe. There is no way to remove the safe without ripping out the wall with the vault door in it first.

It only took the James boys 7 minutes from start to finish.

Great photos Richard. I love American history. I like how they ran the stovepipe all the way across the bank to tie into the chimney. They were making good use of every bit of heat from the wood stove. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for posting these pics.

I just love the lore of the old west (or midwest in this case).

History is so neat, it is fascinating to see the way people lived and worked back in the day.

Kudos to the preservation society there, looks like they've done a great job.
