Icon20 DayDate II 41mm or new 40mm

Hi all,

I bought my first couple of Rolexes from the Rolex Boutique in South Coast Plaza in Orange County a couple of years ago... a two-tone Datejust II which I wear everyday and a two-tone GMT Master II which I gave to my father as a gift.

The boutique store has a policy wherein between years 2-4 after your original purchase, you can return your watch for the full retail price as a credit towards your next watch, as long as your upgraded watch is at least double the price of the original.

I am thinking of taking advantage of that policy and upgrading my Datejust II to a DayDate president. I thought about other all gold models but I got a Mercedes S class last year and think that the DayDate is like the "S class" of watches. Anyhow now that I am doing a little research I think they discontinued the 41mm DDII is this correct? Should I look to buy a 41mm if I can still find one or go with the newer 40mm model? I have ruled out the original 36mm ones because I feel that's too small for my liking.

Which would you choose and why? The DD 41mm or 40mm? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you,

Also, dumb question but does market fluctuations in the price of gold affect Rolex' pricing?

They did discontinue the 41mm, but there may still be a few pieces out there in dealer inventory. If not, it makes your decision that much easier.

I think I would go with the newer DD40 for the new movement. While the 1mm in size doesn't really affect much, IMO, that movement is a major upgrade.

As far as the gold market affecting price...no.

My choice would still be the DDII. I think the further they get out of production the more sought after they'll be. I like the more in your face look of the 41 mm bezels.

There are some proportionate differences between the two as well as the fluted bezel. I prefer the new 40mm. YG in the DD is classic but I prefer the RG and the WG. Platinum is great but WAY out of my price point.

Depends on what dial and metal you want.

For example, I would take a WG blue wave DDII over any WG DD40.

Definitely DD40....

However, remember that it's quite normal to get a discount of 25% and more on PM pieces. You might be better keeping your current watch and simply buying a new DD.

Day Date

Go with the Day Date II its more sporty and the fact its discontinued is a huge bonus. This is coming from someone who had the 41 and sold it for the 40 and then re aquired the 41. The 41 in yellow gold is almost impossible to find so good luck

40mm - you get great proportions and the new movement. It's a beautiful watch.

First off don't purchase from Baron and Leeds unless you enjoy getting beat over the head. Your lucky enough to be on TRF, to know better than to pay full price.
You can trade your 13k GMT in for a 35k DD40 (plus tax), or you can be logical and just buy one brand new of a trusted seller for 25k.

I'm in the same area as you, if you need help PM me.

Two years ago it was my first Rolex purchase so I really wanted good service and peace of mind...but then again I walked away under the impression that the Rolex MSRP are not really negotiable at authorized dealers? Are you saying I can get a new DD40 from authorized dealer for ~$8-10K below sticker?

DDII is much nicer under my eyes. love the larger bezel.
Said that, I would go with a Sky Dweller.

For me, the dial would be the main factor.

Yes 15-20% should be possible from an AD, keep hunting.

I own a WG DDII and while those fancy new diagonal cut dials are tempting I think I will hold back for another year and see what happens. I get the feeling the DDII might get a cult following and be the sought after one years down the road. Not that is really matters much.

Check out the Rolex brochure as there are a couple other improvements on the 40 vs 41 besides movement.

I think there's low if any likelyhood of a discount at the boutique but possibly at other dealers.

The AD buying your old watch back at full retail sounds like a good deal (do they also refund sales tax?), but not if they wont give you a discount on the new watch. Precious metal pieces often attract large (double digit) discounts.

If you get a decent discount you might not even have to sell the older watch.
