Jackets. Does anyone have too many jackets/coats?

I know that a lot of us are collectors, watches, Tumi, objects that we can't discuss, cars, etc. but I wonder if I'm the only one that keeps buying jackets.

I live in NC, about in the middle of the state, so we have cold days and very warm days and a lot of days (like today) where it's cold in the morning and tolerable in the afternoon. So most of my jackets are lightweight.

Every time I got to San Francisco, I buy a leather jacket or coat. The first few times it was because I didn't realize that I needed a jacket in the middle of the summer, and last time it was because it was just too pretty and I think I got a good price (less than half of retail) and couldn't pass it up.

Recently I came across an ad for a Huckberry jacket, which I kind of liked and I'm sure we've discussed here before, but since I've already got like 5 heavy coats and more than 10 lightweight jackets, I couldn't really justify another.

I was just wondering, am I the only one? Should I seek help?

I've lost count but I probably have 35+ or more jackets of various varieties

Lately I've been into heritage inspired jackets like this waxed canvas from Freenote Cloth in California. I also love vintage inspired leather jackets. Then of course there's the regular winter jackets and work wear jackets we need up here in Canada.

Understand where you are coming from. Went through my coats and jacket last year and gave away every item I had not worn for 2 years. Simplified my life and got some smiles from family and the ones that went to GoodWill, will be put to a better use.

This was prompted in part by the fact that as I now spend almost all my free time time on my farm, I am no longer wear leather or high fashion jackets or coats. The ones I use are purpose built for chores or hiking and I also applied the same 2 year rule to those items.

Like it so much, that I am thinking about going to a 1 year rule. Don't wear it for a year, it is gone.

I've got a vintage Schott shearling, a Northface, and a Canada Goose down jacket.

I used to have half a dozen snowboarding jackets, pea coats in blue black and grey of various materials, and a few overcoats. Just got sick of carrying them around.

I’ve got a closet full of jackets and I live in Florida. Some I’ve owned for over 20 yrs and some I’ve never worn. I get it. I don’t need all these jackets and I have thinned the herd once or twice but each one has a purpose for me when the time comes around so I don’t particularly feel the need to get rid of them. Otherwise I’d just have an empty closet.

I recently bought a vintage maverick denim jacket from an old guy named Bill. He bought it new in the mid 60’s, wrecked a Honda 150 scrambler in it (tearing the sleeve), he mended the sleeve with a piece of denim and it’s been that way ever since. It fit me, it was $10 and I occasionally wear it when riding my little moped around the neighborhood.

I didn’t need it, the story attracted me to it. It will stay with me till I’m dead now.

I do like your idea of donating to Goodwill (or the like).

It is so important to help the less fortunate and I think I’ll go through some of my things here and do the same

Definitely have a few too many. Not as many as some here, but jackets take up space, which is at a premium in Manhattan. As for what to do with them, my preference is to hand them directly to a person who is cold, versus giving to an organization or to Goodwill (which many well-off people use as a thrift store to find deals).

I have a problem with jackets. The compounding factor is Colorado has four seasons and we have two homes. Factoring in that I cycle, ski, xc ski and hike…. Yikes.

I did just that several years ago. I gave a homeless man my gloves on a brutally cold winter night. I’ll never forget the look in his eyes, he was truly appreciative.

I also have a bunch of jackets but mainly in the light weight variety that I wear to the office. I can usually wear these year round because my office blasts the AC in the summertime. I mainly wear the Armoury's 3PB or Safari 2 jacket with the occasional chore coat mixed in.

This is only one closet's worth... I have two more.

I just got another last week... full lined 'fine' corduroy...

I live in the desert, so a coat doesn't get used much.

Of course, that means that almost every coat that I have ever owned is still in the closet and hasn't been worn enough to even be cleaned yet.

I don't think I've bought more than one jacket since 1990. Still have it but haven't worn it since maybe 1995.

I just don't need them. Perhaps a fleece pullover or cotton half zip.

I also wear shorts for 10-11 months of the year.

LOL. When I first moved from Canada in Feb of the mid 1980s, I stopped off in Vegas on the way to Southern CA, thinking it was Vegas, it'll be hot and sunny.

Yep I love my jackets, have about 20 as well as about 10 gilets/body warmers. Big fan of Stone Island but also have a few Moncler and Canada Goose. I do my best to rotate through all of them but I’m struggling to squeeze any more into my wardrobe lol

I have the opposite problem. Since I have been working from home for years now, my wardrobe has gone to hell.. I have 1 coat and no jackets except for a couple of hoodies...

I am addicted to outerwear. Whenever I am shopping, I gravitate towards the outerwear and have to remind myself that " I do not need another jacket". Never fails.

Just bought a tweed Barracuda jacket I absolutely did not need. Lots of jackets too and the weather here has been fairly mild these past few years.

I only have have a few now. The casual leather jacket that the leather is so thin its only useful to wear to the mall (very rarely bother with that one). The badly worn leather motorcycle jacket with many thousands of miles on the bike through all kinds of weather (favorite and worn daily), the Canada Goose expedition parka for really cold walks, various sport coats and the black cashmere overcoat for cold weather. Zip hoodies are a quick go-to for the yard or under the motorcycle jacket since the liner failed years ago.
I don't have much use for any others. Luckily my son is grown and I've been able to pass along my vintage denim jacket and a pea coat.

I've always liked coats/jackets even though it's hot most of the year here.
Have about a dozen, which is not too obsessive.
That is probably double the number of cold days we have a year.
I know people who have NEVER owned a coat. If they are cold they just "layer".
I used to wear mine at the office because the Aircon was always a bit too cold.
Been retired for 11 years and only wear a coat when I visit cold southern cities.
I still get an urge to buy a nice coat when I see one and can't bring myself to get rid of the ones I have. Yes, it is a bit of an affliction.

Like Rocky, I live in a subtropical climate so don’t need a jacket unless visiting somewhere colder, but I like jackets and have several more than I need. I still have to stop myself from looking for more unviable Barbours.

Really like the cord harrington PRL above, and Brian’s waxed canvas Freenote Cloth. Great taste, both.
