Surprised when I tried on.

(Been a while since I've posted here)

So I'm in the market for a new watch. (Currently wear a stainless DJII fluted, rhodium dial, Arabic numerals.) Was leaning towards a pre-loved GMTII, but was considering a sub as well.

Was trying on a bunch of different pieces and tried on the Z-blue Milgauss. I was amazed by how nice this watch looked on my wrist. I never was into the Milgauss before. Never had anything against it like a lot of Rolex enthusiasts, but it just didn't speak to me. After I tried it on, I fell in love. I guess that's why they say to try everything on before you buy. (No I haven't purchased it...yet. Also not flipping the DJII)

Anyone else have this experience with this watch, or others you thought you didn't love?

I was completely underwhelmed when I saw it and its nice its different but it just isn't the 'rolex' I like which is more sports/sub etc but each to their own

I was torn between exp2 and the Milgauss. I think I will end up with a Milgauss but it will be in addition to the explorer now!

People have something against the milgauss?

Never heard that before.

Not the most popular model, but nothing held "against" it.

I personally like it very much.

I understand all Rolex watch names except Milgauss... Explorer, Submariner, Daytona, GMT and even my Day Date all make perfect sense... But where does Milgauss hail from, I wonder?

From Rolex.com-

"The reliability and precision of an ordinary mechanical watch can be affected by a magnetic field of 50 to 100 gauss. But many scientists are exposed to much higher magnetic fields during the course of their work. Rolex’s solution was the Milgauss, created in 1956, the first watch of its kind. Hence the name of the watch, mille being French for thousand."

Blue dial always looks tempting in the AD's window, a PM model would be interesting.

Maybe "against it" wasn't the best way to put it. Most negative comments I've heard are that it "doesn't fit within the Rolex brand," "is an entry level Rolex" (which is just plain stupid), "is only worn by those with the need for an antimagnetic watch."

The "against it" part wasn't the point of my post.

Thanks, but I wasn't asking if I should buy it. Was asking if anyone has had a similar experience once they tried on a particular piece that they had previously dismissed.

Gauss - Magnetic Flux Density , Mil - One Thousand , One Thousand Gauss. Resistance to one thousand gauss of magnetic induction.

Gorgeous watch but unfortunately I do not have enough variety in my collection to warrant one yet.

It's gone both ways for me...

I obsessed endlessly over the Yachtmaster in the mid nineties. My AD had one and I asked to try it on...nothing. I came back a month or so later and...still nothing. I had the reverse experience with the SD 4000; i looked at it several times in the AD's display case and just thought "no way" because I already owned a Deep Sea. Wrong again...now I own both.

I also like the Blue Milgaus but the PCL's and polished bezel are fingerprint magnets so it's probably a no go for me but I think it looks great on the wrist.

Yes. Modern DJ 36mm was larger than I expected and felt great on the wrist.

Every time I out on a different model.

Imho the Milgauss is a reference that really comes to life on the the wrist. I especially like the black dial (non-GV) version.

It wasn't on my radar either, but I tried on a friend's and I was hooked. The Z-blue in particular is amazing in person. The color of the dial changes dramatically and it never looks the same. It has great wrist presence without being too large.

It is a beauty...love the blue dial. There are just too many watches in front of it in the "must have" category for me...

The Explorer I. So boring in pictures. Even cool pictures the watch are so uninteresting, especially compared to things like the Sub, GMT, Daytona, etc. But in person, that's a different story. It has far more presence and feels like the rugged capable watch you'd expect it to be.

I have also tried on the blue one which is a stunning watch to say the least, but I cannot get past the green tint on the sapphire crystal :( If they made a black with no tint, then I would heavily think about buying one as my first rolex :)

The green crystal with the blue dial is what makes it for me!

Ahh, Neil...just like me you're a sucker for Rolex blue!

The blue Milgauss is beautiful! I would buy it, but I already have a blue DJII and they're just too similar for me to have both.

Get it!

Thanks for clarifying. The DateJust 36mm is that watch for me. I dismissed it as too small and never tried it on until my wife did at an AD. It was way too big for her, so I tried it on....and loved how it fit. It's on my list after the SeaDweller and GMT...

I've thought this as well.

To the OP: I was the same - didn't like the Milgauss much until I tried on the Z-blue and the black dial GV. Totally hooked now, love the weight of it and deciding which one will be my next purchase (probably the Z-blue as the dial is beautiful)

Z Blue is a great looking watch. Even better on the wrist.
I hated the LVC when it was released. Once I had it on my wrist the rest was history.

Yea it really needs to be on the wrist to be appreciated. Thinking it may be a great compliment to my DJII.
