Update on the scratched crystal

I took my watch into our local AD today for repair. To get a new crystal and bezel insert fitted will cost me $200 US. They did not insist I have it serviced and said it would probably be ready by Monday. Not bad service. They did say that if they did not have the insert in black, they would order one. Joking I said "Just fit a blue one." The guy in the shop was most perturbed and said "Rolex would not allow us to do that." I had to explain I was not serious.

Good news, Adrian. But wouldn't it have been even funnier if you had asked for an orange bezel??

Worse, they would have taken the watch away and refused to give back, for even considering such a defacing abomination.

I'm now sat in Starbucks with my watch on my wrist. The new crystal does make a big difference. As soon as I saw it, it was off with the Panerai (sorry Daren and John) and on with the Rolex. I think they have given it a bit of a polish as well because it looks great.

Only men, and then men of our stature, can get giddy over a watch crystal. Holy crystal Batman, look how it shines! Ha, ha, ha, ha,

Enjoy, today I fondled a Sea-Dweller and got weak in the knees by the texture of the stainless steel alone. My wife stood there completely baffled and she is used to this kind of madness, I can tell you!

As we have just gone off for bad light, it gave me an opportunity to take a better shot of the etching.

You would not believe it! I just did a manual wind of my TT Sub and the crown felt a bit sharp. After close examination through a X 10 magnifier I saw two burrs on the crown. These must have happened when they put the new crystal in. If I have time I'm taking it back tonight. Got to rush, will fill you all in later.

Latest news................the watch has gone back to the workshop.

Thanks for that excellent pic and update, Adrian. I wasn't aware at all that the 'S' actually appeared inside the coronet. Very interesting!!

Strange thing is, after leaving my Ad, I went to the Onkyo shop to see if they did a DVD recorder. I could do with one for my surround sound system. Anyway, there was a young guy in there with a SS Daytona. I asked him if I could look at it. As I still had my magnifier and I was a bit suspicious of the authenticity of the watch, I looked for the etched coronet. It did have one but it was nothing like the one on mine and another giveaway was the crown would not screw in. Other than that it was a fairly good fake, with hologram etc. BTW Onkyo don't make a DVD recorder or it's not in their 2005 catalogue.

Onkyo do make a good DVD recorder. It is just that you pissed the salesman off so much by bursting his bubble about his watch that he had sour grapes.

Aaron.

BTW. I wouldn't have a clue if Onkyo do or don't but it makes the story more fun. You might even get the watch serviced for free after the rectification work.

Nice pic, they are hard to photograph. It looks just like the others I have seen. The burrs should be not problem. =) maverick

Not bad for hand-held is it. I had to use TTL focusing, I tried with auto focus but it just would not focus on the crystal surface.
