Torn Oysterflex fin

Well didn’t expect this to happen... I’ve dailyed my 116519LN for just over the last year now and just noticed one of the fins on the underside of the bracelet is starting to tear off. I haven’t been abusive to the watch at all so this comes as a bit of a surprise. You think Rolex covers this under their warranty or is this “wear and tear”? I’d hope Rolex would replace for free given the watch is 1 year old.

I would think that would be fully covered under warranty.

I hope so too. Will find out tomorrow.

The fins definitely seem like a weak point in the design. Was hoping these would last at least 5-10years

So you shave your wrists?

No?

Well then it’ll be abuse - no soup for you!

Clearly you have a fair expectation of replacement. But I do recall some old thread about a Rolex Croc strap fraying on the underside in less than a year and RSC declining replacement under warranty.

But at that time the charge was excessive sweating or immersion in water. Don’t think that’ll play a role here.

Good luck and please keep us informed

I would not expect that to be covered under warranty.

Unless this was already torn when it was purchased new (and you can prove it) I wouldn’t have high expectations of this been covered ‘under warranty’. The warranty excludes wear and tear - pun intended.

It may be replaced free of charge as a gesture of good customer service so it’s not all doom and gloom.

Yeah, I wouldn’t get your hopes up for a “warranty” replacement either. Hopefully a good will replacement though.
Do those fins serve much purpose? I thought I’ve read threads of members taking them off for comfort reasons

I’ve heard of them being removed for comfort as well so I wouldn’t think it’s something you need to worry about in terms of safety for the watch. Take a look at the fins, does it look torn or does it look like a defect in the strap (e.g. loose threads etc). I think your basis for warranty claim will come down to abuse vs defect and what is it looks like visually. So make sure your strap is pristine when you take it in.

That is a bummer for sure. I would hope Rolex would fix that under warranty especially since its less than a year old. Good luck!

I would hope! Would lessen my opinion of the brand if they didn’t stand behind what could be a design flaw in a 1 year old watch that costs as much as a car. I’m very gentle with my watches, so I would definitely say this wasn’t a result of abuse, just normal daily wear. Sometimes when it’s hot I’ll readjust my watch on my wrist - I wonder if this done over an extended period revealed this weak point? Nonetheless, I think Rolex should stand behind their product and replace free. We shall see.

They're less than $1500 Around 250-300 a side last time I checked.

No strap is rated to last five years of constant wear. If you wear leather or rubber, the need for replacement is inevitable and not a design flaw.

Given that we're not hearing about problems with the OF, this particular bit of damage feels more like bad luck than the design or manufacturing flaw that a warranty would formally cover. However, Rolex can also be very generous at times, so fingers crossed. Damage after only a year sucks, and I could see Rolex being good about this even if it's not properly a warranty issue, since it's a relatively inexpensive replacement item.

After seeing the post about the rubber strap tearing on another individuals watch at the spring bar, I wouldn’t trust any rubber strap but OEM.

Surely that is wear&tear issue. That’s a rubber strap. How long do you expect it to last? I had a rubber B that lasted like around 9 months.

Crazy.....

The more I hear about Rubber B, the less I want anything to do with it.

My Panerai OEM rubber strap is 8 years old and still going strong.

Seeing the Oysterflex like that, the fin does look like a ridiculously weak point.....
