Engraving will have not affect the warranty

Mine was done and has had warranty work done since with no issue.

Indeed

I inquired with RSC Toronto about having an engraving done on one of my casebacks and they said they have a technician there who does this. They let you select font style etc.

This was just about a month ago

If they do wear it, it will likely be for rare special occasions only. Kids are also getting less ostentatious and more conscious of wealth gaps as generations go by.

In 2040, when a lot of the older generations are dying out or increasingly relying on health wearables for their daily lives, the watch market is likely going to be quite different, with hybrid watches (traditionally styled but with digital health monitoring functionality) being available from all of the big watch manufacturers.

thanks for weighing in. here’s my take:

it doesn’t necessarily make me chuckle, but I do find it very strange, and honestly a little sad, that someone could be interested enough in mechanical watches to spend thousands of dollars on them and frequent a forum like this one, and simultaneously think that in 20 or 30 years “smart watches and wearables” will make it so nobody wants to wear “an old fashioned automatic watch” anymore.

mechanical watches have been “old fashioned” and arguably “obsolete” since quartz and digital watches became a thing in the 70s (look up “quartz crisis” on your google), and they’ve certainly become quite a bit moreso the last 15 years that everyone’s started carrying an iphone around in their pocket—and many young people (I’d have thought at least all the ones on this forum) still see the allure.

but more importantly, I sure as hell wouldn’t consider spending 10k on a freaking rolex if I didn’t feel like there was any timelessness in the thing and really thought the value they hold to people would vanish from the world once facebook ray-bans, apple watches and whoop wristbands or whatever catch on a bit more.

thanks Adam! I hadn’t realized the serial numbers worked to that level of specificity month-wise… that’s quite a cool idea as well. no reason to stop at just one birth year watch I guess

Sorry I seemed insulting. It’s your watch purchase. The idea of giving myself a gift to be passed on never made sense to me but all the best.

Good luck with your search, I bought my daughter an SS GMT to pass down to her when she finishes uni, or reaches a personal milestone in her life. The purchase date on the card is also her exact birth date which was a nice touch from the AD.

Till then everytime I wear it, it reminds me of the crazy week in which she came into our lives

You seem pretty confident the form factor for this tech will remain a watch lol.

I’ll take that bet…

Congratulations! I personally love the idea of buying a birth watch to celebrate the life of your son/daughter. Overall it adds an extra layer of sentiment that will be greatly appreciate by your son.

Did you happen to get 2021 produced/sold watch?

Thanks and totally agreed! And yes—dated 8/2021. I’ve actually got a pretty decent AD relationship so had been waiting on that but finally decided screw it and went grey.

I did this for my first grand daughter, I tried and tried to find a sub at the AD and found nothing so I opted for a Breitling super ocean instead I know she will love it!

I think some others have said it but I don't believe engraving will void warranty.

Cannot go wrong with the explorer I, I may be biased but it truly is a classic, well rounded watch. 124270 has all the right proportions as well.

My other suggestion would be a sub, but those may be a bit harder to come by.
