As I was reading the Hodinkee story on JayZ and his Tiffany Patek, the phone rung…

On the screen, the name of a large AD was displayed in bold letters.

I slid my finger over the screen.

“Hello, this is ******” I said as I held the device up to my ear.

On the other end, the voice introduced itself. “Hi there, it’s ****** from *****, I’m calling about the watch.”

“The watch?” I asked, recalling my recent visit to the AD and mentally preparing to tell my wife that the bonus I just received was about to be converted into a RG DayDate.

But destiny had kinder things in mind for me than the few nights on the couch such an expenditure would inevitably have afforded me.

“Yes, the watch” the voice confirmed “the Oyster Perpetual 41 you had expressed your interest in”.

Relief and excitement rushed through my veins simultaneously to form the oddmost cocktail of exultation. I tried to compose myself. The significance of what she just said begun to dawn on me. First and foremost I would not have to part with a material portion of the hard earned Swiss francs I just received and would hence not incur the wrath of the voice of reason in our household. In addition, the particular colorway I expressed my interest in for the Oyster Perpetual a few months ago was very similar to the one displayed right in front of me, on my computer screen, on the wrist of JayZ.

The newfound excitement for that particular shade of turquoise, if not more accurately the generalized euphoria around it had led me to discard any hopes of ever getting this watch. The AD in question is also notoriously difficult to get anything from, due to its sheer size and the unbelievably wealthy clientele it caters to.

And yet, only days after the dust settled under Aurel’s gavel, here I was getting “the call”.

Needless to say, I could not have been more excited, echoing the cool smile JayZ was giving me from the screen in front of me, while he was showing off a watch in the very color I’d soon pick up my OP in.

I just can’t wait to go pick it up now.

It’s going to be a long 9 days… oh wait, no, did I really just say nine days?

Luckily in my case, it’s not going to be quite as long and I don’t intend on disappearing in the process either.

What a year this is, with the birth of our wonderful son, the purchase of my SD in celebration thereof, the allocation of the AP and now this. There have been very deep ravines to cross as well to contrast this all. We have fought severe health battles and have overcome some very trying times that relegated material goods like watches back into the complete insignificance that defines them. But yet, we got through and we are still here, and now get to celebrate with three fantastic watches. I feel unbelievably fortunate and grateful. I hope that your year as well, may end in the best of ways - and be followed by a healthy, happy and prosperous 2022.

Congratulations, stay healthy. That's what is most important! Without health we would not be able to enjoy these timepieces.

The eagle has landed…

At the breakfast table. And it hasn’t even been nine days. But somehow this stupid App keeps sending me error messages when I want to upload an image.
