GRNR vs BLRO
40th is coming up in December 2024, and it's a big year: first kid on the way, looking at a decent promotion at work after a tonne of hard work, and we're seriously gonna start house hunting. I've been quietly saving up for a celebratory watch, come that 40th birthday, and have more or less narrowed it down to, grouped by price, in order of preference:
No surprise to the purse: * 126710BLRO - Jubilee * 126713GRNR * JLC Master Geographic Stretch: * 116719BLRO - used * AP Royal Oak Dual Time 26120ST - used * JLC Master Geographic RG I do have a purchase history with my AD - Fourtane in Carmel, CA - mostly consisting of my 116610LN, my wife's DJ, along with some other smaller items of jewelry, ranging between 3 ~ 7k. Unfortunately, I happen to be in the Bay Area, which makes me small fry on any AD list, so with my top pick being the SS BLRO, I'm likely not seeing this thing by December of next year; moreover, I'm fundamentally opposed to paying grey market prices. Having said that, the GRNR is possible, and it'd be no consolation prize; however, I do have to ask how these two tone pieces wear with time. I love the look of it now, at nearly 40 - will I still love it when I'm 20 years older? |

Your birthday is over a year from now. Seems like there’s time to go for the watch you most want.

I got the call for the GRNR last week, I did turn it down. I much rather prefer the BLRO on jubilee.

The BLRO on Jubilee. Don't think you will get one through an AD but you never know.

For you first list…if you’re not willing to go grey, it’s a total crapshoot, stroke of luck, etc…if you will be privileged enough to hand your special occasion, hard earned, birthday celebration money to your AD. (Speaking specifically about the Rolex) Good luck.
Possibly the grey market prices will be where you might be able to get a NIB, exact watch you want. Maybe go that route. Your second “stretch” list…since you say “used”… It’ll be grey market anyway. Enjoy the hunt. |

Interesting that you'd go GRNR over BLRO - why? I knew BLRO would be the overwhelmingly popular option in this thread, but I feel like it's following a hype curve, just like the BLNR before it, and that will die down when the next "thing" comes along.

I got my BLRO jubilee for my 40th. Dont underestimate the power of the special occasion. You dont have to be a super VIP... that I can promise you. Share with your AD that you have always wanted a BLRO and that you have a kid on the way, and you are turning 40... all of it. And that you want to commemorate with a pepsi. They'll come thru most likely, especially because you have SOME purchase history as opposed to some random stranger with all of these "milestones".
Regarding the GRNR you will probably like it better in 20 years than you do now. I'm not a TT guy but every now and then I do lust after a bluesy and this new GMT... but then I look at the pictures and in some lighting i dont like the look as much. So I stay with SS.

Between the GMTs, the JLC & the APRO, this is a varied bunch. I could see if the dilemma was between full gold/two tone or oyster vs jubilee, but because these are vastly different pieces, I'd say you really need to ask yourself which will make you happiest? Which do you envision wearing the longest? Is value retention important? Would you ever use one of these pieces to "hop scotch" yourself to something "bigger/better?"
If price wasn't a factor, I'd take the BLRO on jubilee. I can't see myself wearing any of the others with as much enthusiasm.

In terms of resale value, I'm not concerned outside of the fact that both my sub and this potential GMT will be handed down: the sub to my nephew, who will be born next month, and the GMT to whoever our daughter decides to marry. |

The Pepsi is Iconic, but the GRNR is incredible on TT. I received mine from RAZNY after 2 months and my follow up call came from James and Sons after 4 months… so that gives you an idea on what your wait could look like.
