For me, you can pick any Rolex Explorer from the line and it's close to my view of perfection.

1016, 14270, 11, 21, 12 and now 22. They're all great. Discreet, not pretentious nor ostentatious, just great watches.

OPs, too

Another vote for G-Shock here. For perfect timekeeping, endurance without servicing and toughness, you can’t really beat any G-Shock with Tough Solar and Multi Band 6. Self charging, self adjusting -- The two big historic hurdles of watchmaking cleared.

Nightly adjustment to atomic time (if you’re in the zone), charging from pretty much any light source, twice the depth-rating of a Rolex Oyster - and that’s before getting into functions like multi alarms, world times, etc, and then the alti/baro/comp sensors of the higher-end tool models.

I have many watches that I like, personally value and enjoy wearing more, but this one here is what I’d take if I could take only one in a major emergency or if I was going for some far-off exploration.....

Submariner or Datejust 41. It could go either way depending on your lifestyle. Throw in an Apple Watch, and your set.

Datejust 41 if it's your only Rolex.

The second I add another watch the DJ doesn't get any use... but I love it.

What does best mean?

Combination of sportiness, precious metals, diamond hour markers, and an exhibition caseback would be the platinum Daytona.

Probably the Explorer II 16570. Discreet, very comfortable, date and GMT functions. It was my second Rolex after 25 years with just one. The rest is history….
