Aquanaut 5167a Water Resistance?
Noticed with the new Aquanaut release the water resistance is 30m. On Patek's website it now says the 5167a is 30m as well. Did this change? Always thought it was over 100m.

I don't know about the new version, it is a quartz one so things might be different, but I was surprised to see that the 5167 is now at 30m WR. I've owned 3 of those over the last 15 years and it has always been 120m.

Unified criteria for water-resistance
To ensure the homogeneity and clarity of the information provided to clients, Patek Philippe has decided to introduce a new unified standard of water-resistance set at 30 meters for all watches certified as water-resistant – having been tested in air and underwater by immersion at an overpressure of 3 bars (corresponding to a depth of 30 m). This measure makes it possible to guarantee the same performance level across all the models concerned and to provide perfectly comprehensible information as to the day-to-day activities in which clients can engage while wearing their watch: washing their hands, showering, bathing, swimming and other aquatic activities, including diving to a depth of 30 m – which corresponds in large measure to actual utilization. Agree this is much better than the, “30m is only good for walking in the rain and washing your hands” nonsense. |

I mean it's good that they're saying that it's a real 30m wr, but then a 5270 is supposed to have the same WR as a 5167?

This is a joke! Seriously, I know all they care about is high margins and precious metals, but this shows their utter disregard for those that consider the Aquanaut a sports watch and intend it to use as such. Patek is becoming the ultimate bling accessory.

It is not hate, just contempt for the brand.

Noticed this as well. How do you literally have "aqua" in the name in a sports watch and have 30m water resistance?! In the tiny world of watch hobbyists this seems like a bit of a scandal. All of the aquanaut line (so far as the ones I've checked) are marked down to 30mm.

Yea I don't get why they wouldn't at least say 60m to distinguish from dress pieces. Are they gonna start using smaller gaskets since they don't need to test out at 120m now?

AP has been reporting "true" water resistance for years and yet people always go "50m! I CAN'T EVEN WALK IN THE RAIN WITH THIS!"

AP sure did take a beating over water resistance for many years.

Hello.
I did the « Atelier 215 » in Geneva. It’s a training session to learn how to disassemble and reassemble the 215 caliber. The instructor is the one that is training all the watchmakers from all the ADs around the world. He told me, back in the days, that water resistance was measured with *unscrewed* crowns for the models that have screwed crowns. I must admit that the 30m across all the models (except MR) is now a bit confusing but I have brought my 5167A and 5712A in many swimming pools, hamman, oceans and sees without any problems. So those are definitely not for « only walking under the rain ». Which is absolutely not the case for MR. I was told that one MR owner had his watch ruined when he was trapped under a huge massive rain. Those are definitely not suitable even for walking under the rain. I have an appointment soon at the Paris salon, I will clarify that 30m thing with the watchmaker there. Last edited by starship33; 10 April 2024 at 02:31 PM.. Reason: wording |

The new policy makes no sense regarding water resistance. All water resistant watches are now rated 30m on Patek website. I don't follow any of the posts being made about 'real' water resistance. The bottom line is that Patek is officially certifying that for example my 5370P is now as capable as my Nautilus of being submerged - both are now rated to a 'real' 30m. I would be interested to understand the likelihood of a successful warranty claim with Patek after swimming in my 5370 if they also say swimming with an identically rated Nautilus is ok.

This does seem odd, the sports models haven’t changed and the construction of the watches is solid, I would be surprised if the gaskets have been changed, it would be safe to say the 120m water resistance was sound unless the crown and tubes are now different.

what are they really saying here? that up to now their ratings were b.s and the watches that were rated 30m actually did not hold up to that standard? and those rated beyond only held up to 30m? did they change something technical in the watches just now ( i doubt it) or did they just decide to be more 'thruthful'? i am confused.

No matter how you look at it this will remain a massive downgrade in the advertised capabilities of their sports watches. The only info that might be helpful is if the 120m were exaggerated by as much as a factor 4 in the past or if they just refuse to stand behind more than 30m now to be able to have a single number across the catalogue (as they claim in their info), well knowing that the real number remains a lot higher for some of the sports watches.

And this will affect the sales of their sport watches how? They don't have to compete with Rolex, in fact Patek doesn't have to compete at all. Patek has been working for years to rid themselves of the low priced stainless time only sport watch crowd. 30 Meters, love it or leave us.

In the end, 30m is plenty good for Open Water (18m) and Advanced Open Water (30m) divers which represent a majority of recreational divers, who will likely still be using a dive computer in parallel. Even free diving won't be limited by 30m so I actually find that it's totally respectable ASSUMING that Patek has elevated the 30m standard to be inclusive of diving requirements.
Honestly, was always a little cautious taking even my 120m Aquanaut below snorkeling depths and have not dived with anything other than those rated as 200m Professional so this would be a nice feature, just need to be clear and provide the right education and guarantees! |

My AD is meeting with Patek today at W&W and is going to ask if I can now swim in my 5370 as it is rated the same as my Nautilus. Will be ideal to be able to time the splits for each length.
