For me, the equation is:

any watch you actually wear and enjoy > any watch you don’t wear because you don’t feel comfortable wearing it

Given your reasons, that was a great trade!

Having owned both watches (white dial on the AP though) you made a great trade. Especially if you want to wear it every day. I loved my AP but it didn’t suit my lifestyle. Congratulations.

On what planet are you seeing WG Subs for $30K?

I'll add one more opinion... again the AP is a beautiful watch and a piece of art... very IG worthy... but the movement was not good. It is nearly impossible to set the watch accurately... I thought it was an issue so I sent it in for service... came back and it did the exact same thing. Ive since found it's just a thing with AP... and that seriously disappointed me.

So... if you've never owned one.. do your homework if what's under the hood is just as important as what's on the surface.

On the flip side I've worn the Sub everyday since Friday and it's lost maybe 2 seconds total... that's quality.

For a daily wear type watch I’d take the Rolex for the reasons you stated
Good trade that that point , though I do love the APRO.

I think you probably gave up about 3-4k in the trade, but in the big scheme of things, who cares, you got PM vs SS.

I would have kept the RO, but your reasoning is sound for sure.

Great trade. Vastly superior in durability, better looking and precious metal! What’s not to like?

Cannot ever imagine trading a Royal Oak for a submariner myself. But when you said the thing about being scared to scratch it I do get that, though I think my solution would be to buy a steel sub for day to day and keep my Royal Oak for special occasions. Hope you enjoy the sub, at least the numbers are smart like you said.

That thing is a Monster! Great looking watch and even more in person handling it. Handled one for the first time in the store last week. I never even thought about wanting one until I picked it up and put it on my wrist. Trading SS AP for WG Rolex straight up, cheers and well done!

I would have done that in a second, just to lose the AP. While I appreciate the horology around AP and PP, their design aesthetic does nothing for me. I'm no Rolex fanboy. I can easily go towards the other end of the spectrum and find 5-6 Omega watches I'd happily own and wear based on looks alone. To each, his own. Enjoy your watch.

Incoming... trade.. your opinions welcome!

Great move, IMO. I just never understood the appeal of those octagonal shaped cases with tiny screws all around: a genuinely unattractive aesthetic, in my opinion. High horology means nothing, if the watch is unattractive.Enjoy your gold Sub!

I own a 15450st blue dial. It fits smaller than the maxi case of the Rolex. For a stealth wealth watch I was torn between these exact 2. I went for the AP and thought if I hate it could could always trade it. But no, I love the AP, but not as a one and only, you need something more durable for day to day life. The Sub ticks that box. For me I have the DaytonaC and BLNR for daily wear and 15450 for more special occasions.

Honestly, I would say the AP is my personal favourite, but wouldnt think anyone is crazy for favouring the sub.

Agree this was a good trade. Like others, I don’t see the appeal of AP.

Most people would call you crazy but I applaud you for truly knowing what you like. I think you made a great choice. The Rolex is durable, precious metal, and reliable. I cannot say the same for the AP.

"High horology means nothing if the watch is unattractive"-- I love that so much because it's so true. I might have to steal that line for future debates.

This is a Rolex forum, after all. So we’re all (reasonably) biased. I’m a Rolex fanboy like so many of you. And I’m a big PM fan, too. But I
love my 39 mm AP Kasparov. Comfortable, beautiful IMHO and a keeper of great time. (Not as durable as my Rolexes, though, for sure.)

Smart move! I really love my AP watches, but I think you are spot on with your reasoning.

Very few things feel better on the wrist than an all gold Rolex sport watch. And few watches can similarly handle the wear the way the Rolex can.

Enjoy!
