Thinking of getting a day-date.. advise needed

Hi all, i currently have a YG daytona and a meteorite gmt. Im thinking of adding a day-date next to the collection. Prices on the sports models are pretty transparent but i feel that its hard to say the same of the day-date.

Few quick questions i have
1. If i were to get the plat model, would it be safe to say i should be going for the light blue dial to provide some form of differentiation? Otherwise i should go WG if i were to choose a different dial colour?

2. How hard is it to order a plat model (or any other model) from a dealer? Is the wait list just as crazy for the sport watches?

3. I dont see many day-dates being sold on the secondary market, are they generally trading above/below retail on the grey market?

2. Your question triggered me to ask how did u get your sports model in first place then day date would be pretty much the same answer

You don’t see as many Day-Dates for sale because they aren’t in demand like SS Sports models but I don’t see why that is even a question. Do you like the watch? Then just buy it.

i definitely am thinking of buying it. it comes down to what metal/ dial combo i should choose and whether going the AD/grey route would be a better option to take

Personally I’d go PT with the ice blue dial of your choice. The new one with fluted bezel will be difficult to find even at greys I would think, but the discontinued smooth bezel (my personal choice) can be had pretty quickly on the secondary market

Day-Date is such a gorgeous timepiece, if you love it, get it. Meteorite dial would be the best or go for the dial that you love the most. Platinum is more expensive and look better than WG but if you love white gold more, go for it.

There are plenty of D-D on the secondary market but the premium is a lot lower than SS. Don’t buy for investment.

Wish I had the same dilemma
If Pt I’d go for the fluted bezel and ice blue Romans.
Arguably the nicest Rolex in the line up.

Don’t know about pricing of those but I always buy the cheapest one I can find.
AD experience I don’t care about. Just have a look at the platforms

Could anyone elaborate on not buying DD for investment? Are they now trading below retail, except for the most recent fluted bezel platinum models?

I thought the demand for DD in gold, 36 mm, and even DD2 is pretty weak. Like a 36 mm DD is less than 40% the price of a 40 mm of the same type?

the huge difference between the 36 and 40 comes from the 36 being available for like 50 years. the ones that are 40% less than the DD40 would be ones that are 15-20 years old and/or heavily polished. if you compare current gen 36 (128xxx) to 40 it would be a lot closer in terms of % from msrp

regardless, PM models always take hits after you buy them excluding a select few that are hard to get

Pick the PM and color you want. I love my platinum DDII with the Blue Wave dial(dark blue). The feel is what does it for me. It's almost electric.

If you add a DD it would balance the GMT & Daytona.

I did that years ago but went for a vintage 1803.

And while you didn't ask, I'd say consider a PP dress watch by comparison.

I think it is wise to only get the Pt. DD in the sky-blue dial.

You've got a meteorite GMT and a gold Daytona. You can literally do anything you want at this stage.

You didn't ask, but the first thing I would do in your shoes is get a nice steel sub...and then go after whatever DD makes your heart go pitter patter.

I’m curious about the secondary market part of your question. People often say that on the day date you take an immediate depreciation hit if you buy at an AD but when I look at the secondary market, everything is listed right around retail. Maybe I just don’t know where to look for a used one? I am interested in adding one but not for the retail price I don’t think.

1. The dial is a great identifier of pt; I would certainly go with that colour.
2. Not common, but also not difficult to get with some history.
3. I assume you'd lose a little -- it is not for everyone after all.

It’s not easy from AD but not hard in grey. Ice blue is the ONLY way to go. It’s just beautiful and hard to wear anything else
