Why Not Disclose the Whole Serial Number?

I have noticed that when listing serial numbers to indicate the year the watch was made as part of a for sale listing x's are used in the last 3 or 4 digits or any picture of the papers the last half is covered up. Why is that?

Because scammers could then steal a real serial number and use it in their ads to sell their fakes.

To prevent scammers from ripping them off and posting them for sale on their own sites or fleabay.

And again some fake manufactures will use legit serials to put on manufactured fake watches

I think this is just something we are used to doing (myself included), BUT really even if you just pluck a number out of thin air, you're going to get a real one.

No matter if it's "thought of" or stolen, Rolex will pick the fake everytime, so rest assured if yours is the legit one, then you have nothing to worry about.

Well John agree not impossible but to pick a 6 digit number to correspond with a date letter plus legit Rolex serial is like 1 in 13,983,816 or approximately 1 in 14 million.

Hello Padi

That interesting. I've never heard that before.

So you are saying that serial numbers are chosen at random or by some sort of logarithmic process AND not sequential?

I have seen two different people with consecutive serial numbers with SD's.

Wouldn't Rolex use bands of serial numbers for models eg. Subs Z000001-Z100000, DJ's Z100001-Z200000 etc.

In any case, who would know (apart for Rolex) that a serial number does not exist?

John.

But will it match up with the model of the watch on record? So it seems no one is really sure but I wonder if models such as specific DJs, Subs, GMT's ect. ect. are assigned the serial numbers and Rolex keeps that info confidential. Some scumbag scammer may pull out a serial number but it would be impossible to match it with its proper model. Even a perfect fake could be proven a fraud by Rolex.

Each serial-numbered Rolex watch is matched to its initial owner. That record is kept by Rolex. I have three Rollies, but they have all been purchased from the initial owner. The ownership has never been transferred from the original owner to me, so if I were to check with Rolex regarding the SN's on my three watches, I would only be able to see who originally purchased the watches.
