Sick watch!
Double congrats.
If you're not completely aware yet, that there is a pure classic. It has all the basic vintage goodness, plexi glass, check, beautiful even patina(the discoloration in the hour markers, hands and dial) check, red sub lettering, check, lug holes, check, beautiful acquisition history, check.
When you get it service, it is recommended to focus on the movement, a good cleaning, perhaps a polish, the plexi can be made to look new or possibly replaced with a correct period one, but preserve the dial at all cost.
From what I've seen on this forum the folks who were recommended know how to care for this kind of watch.
Please post after pics.

Congrats on both accounts! Your first Rolex is considered a "grail" watch by many!

Awesome piece of family history. Great watch to pass down from generation to generation. Make sure whoever services this watch keeps it original and just services the internals.
Congrats and welcome to the forum.

Nice Submariner. If you need to have it serviced, no one better than Chamosa Watch Repair on Preston Road in Dallas. Many from the forum here use his service. Ridley also does nice work at restorations, but it doesn't appear that your watch needs much restoration work. I'd definitely check with Chamosa before you drop some "big dollars" on it elsewhere.

Congrats on both the graduation and watch the more you know about watches, the more appreciation you will have for that historic icon

Congrats! That's one of my favorite watches. Sounds like you'll be enjoying it for a very long time! Regarding servicing, make sure you thoroughly consider what you should and should not replace in a service on such a collectible watch. While I love vintage Rolex watches, I'm no expert on them, so wait for all of the member who are experienced with vintage Subs to chime in...

Ok so a little update... I have had to suspend looking into the restoration and maintenance on this beauty for another 36 days and counting. For some reason this little Bar Exam thing has diverted a large quantity of my time and energy and I don't see that abating until the Exam is over... Thank you for all the recommendations and I will surely post some pics when I am finally able to get this thing into the shop...
