Sometimes the simplest things are the nicest...

Greetings TRF,

Curiosity got the better of me yesterday and I just had to do it, I had to dig deeper...

...See where this is going? I thought so...

First, we must take the caseback off.

Notice the lovely perlage on the dust cover.

...And when you take it off...

With its brass plate and bridges, the movement looks really shiny in the stainless steel case, it's very nice to look at it (in my humble opinion, at the very least).

The next pictures are all of the movement so you can take a look at it, please accept my apologies if they're redundant but I had a lot of fun shooting it with the camera yesterday.

I must admit I was impressed by the way the bridges were shaped. Not only do they have a Côtes de Genève finish on them but their sharp tips remind me of those of a pocket watch somehow, it also allows you to take a better look at the wheels underneath.

Funny how the jewels for the center wheel and the mainspring are not the same color, I wonder which ones are the original ones (if any of them have been replaced, that is)...

The hairspring, notice the brass pallet fork's bridge underneath.

...And here's another detail I particularely like and that really helps to you to see the movement properly, notice how the escapement wheel has its own small bridge, I love that!

I couldn't help but take a picture of the brand name engraved on that bridge, it looks very crisp and sharp.

Thank you for watching, feel free to comment!

Thank you Craig, the light box and the options I discovered on my camera do help to reduce the amount of reflections on the metal but I'll admit I could have taken more time to take those pictures, some are blurry...

That is a very beautiful movement Carl

Do I see a jewelled pallet fork on the second last picture?

Bas, you are right, this watch has a jewelled pallet fork but I must say a lot of watches have those. In fact, all the watches I've looked at so far had forks with pallets made out of synthetic rubies.

Here's the picture you told me about, the orange arrow shows the pallet of the fork (which is, as you've already seen, a synthetic ruby), the blue arrow shows the ruby that holds the upper part of the fork's pinion (the pivot goes in the jewel's hole, obviously) whilst the pink arrow shows the other "arm" of the fork, in this picture the second pallet would be hidden by the hairspring's serge, where the red arrow points.

Only pin-pallet escapements don't have jeweled pallet forks, the thing is that these movements are cheap and very uncommon in watches, they are mostly used in mechanical alarm clocks and kitchen clocks

I asked about it because I thought I saw a jewelled pallet on an other picture but that was just light shining through one of the other jewels

Oh I see! You are right about the pin-pallet escapements, I know I've only seen them on clocks myself. Don't worry though, it's not an illusion due to light!

Wow! Beautiful pics! Awhile back I took some pics of the movement in my 1951 14k lord Elgin which I will have to post soon. They didn't come out as good as yours did though.

Thank you kindly! A light box helps a lot if you want to control the reflections on the crystal and the metal.
