9315 folded link work- is it possible?
Hi all,
How does one go about removing links on a 9315? Is it possible or does this need to be taken to RSC or an experienced watchmaker for link removal? If there are any threads on how to's with 9315s I'd appreciate the info! Thanks! Greg

Don't try it yourself - send it to Michael Young in Hong Kong.

If you are a bit handy you can do it yourself. Just fold them open :-)

You don't have to send it to Hong Kong for a link removal. Any Rolex watchmaker can do it

X2. Just be careful removing the center link or you risk the possibility of placing a bend in the link. If you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, find a local watchmaker that knows how to remove these type of links. I would not send a bracelet to a foreign country to have a link removed - you not only have the insurance/postage expenses but run the risk of the bracelet being lost or stolen.

It looks like you are in nyc have you tried calling RSC they might help you out stress free. I've done it once my method was to use a flat case tool to pry open the link just enough to get thin pliers in the gap in the closed position. Then opening the pliers with the nose in the gap to open the link a little more. The trick is to open the link just enough to get it off. I think where a lot of links get bent is from over opening them all the way. I did not use the pliers to close the links fearing it would chew them and crimp them unevenly. I covered the link in tape and pressed it closed against a countertop using another flat object to apply pressure from the top. I wouldn't want to try it again there might be better methods out there |

Thanks for the great info folks. It sounds like this can be quite a process. I might just make a visit to a local watchmaker or RSC as some suggested.

Greg,
You can tell the difference on ones that people have tried at home. Either they do not get it folded back and closed evenly like the other links or there are tell tale signs of bent metal where they might have opened it up to far and then tried to bend it back only to cause a ripple (dbl bend) in the link back. It does not take much to kink the metal fold. As others have mentioned, no on sending it to Michael. I am sure he is capable and the link would look like new. Just to far and since you are in NY you are bound to find a watchmaker that can help you in house. Good luck on what ever you do decide to do. Tom |
