A Couple of Questions?
1) What impact is there in getting a T<25 watch relumed (a good job not a hack job). What is the best sort of relume to do? Does it hurt resale value of the watch?
2) Is it safe to wear a Rolex in a Sauna? In my case I wear my 14060. |

1. Hard core vintage buyers prefer all original. Anything less impacts max value.
2. Haha |

1. Don't do it. Get a luminova service dial and keep the original in case you want to sell it some day. Vintage collectors value the original tritium dial.
2. Keep the Submariner away from any kind of moisture. Just kidding. You know people go diving with these things, right? |

Lee,
Most will tell you reluming does have an impact on the value of the watch. To what extent generally depends on the reference, age, rarity, etc... That's not to say a gentle massage hasn't been done on certain pieces, but normally it's small and with the goal of preserving the existing plot. A better option, though one that will still impact, might be a service replacement dial/hands. As to the sana...if all is correct sure. |

The watch isn't a rarity but my rather late model 14060. Any idea where and approximately how much for service dial and hands replacements?

They come from RSC either directly or through a watchmaker with a parts account. I replaced one once upon a time for about 225 USD for the dial and 75 USD for the hands. That was a while ago. Not sure what pricing might be now.

Gracias, Senor. Anyone have a recommendation local to Boston to have this work done?
I'm only aware of Govberg locally. |

Lee, as you only bought this sub a few weeks ago, maybe you could just sell it and buy a luminova sub. The price difference would probably be cheaper, and less bother, than buying service dial and hands.

Adam, I know but I just don't like the hassles of selling things. Too annoying but a great idea.

If you won't be selling it down the line then any reduction in value won't matter. I don't do it with my vintage watches but if you want it to glow then you should go ahead. Sorry I don't have a suggested source to do the work.

As far as the temperature range of the watches. The Sauna isn't so humid as it is hot (about 125 F). I guess it shouldn't be any worse then a spring day in Phoenix so I guess it would be fine. |

No I wish. It came up in a conversation I had with them once but they only mentioned they had a watch maker with a parts account (can't remember which town). I didn't need any work done at the time so I didn't push the issue. Their stand up guys though. I would give them a call or stop by, Paul is a friendly guy and a real watch guy if you can catch him in the store.

I still say flip it. You could probably find a 98 or 99 with Luminova dial for a similar price to what you could get for yours. That would save time and money compared to finding new parts and employing a watchmaker.

I have worn my submariner; all the time whilst serving in HM forces, Diving, parachuting, riding horses, golf, on expeditions, going to gym/ all sports... Never took it off swimming, sauna, jacuzzi... These watches were meant to be worn doing 'stuff' Yes, they get scratched, battered, chipped, need servicing, sometimes broken... But they are to be worn; In my opinion to many people use them as just jewellery and the tool watch they are. Sorry, but wear it. |
