My GMT 16700 is a U serial with just 'Swiss' on the dial, is that correct or is it a replacement dial?

GMT Master II with green date....very nice feel.

One of my two recent acquisitions is an 18K yellow gold GMT Master II. I had the same model in two tone with the oyster bracelet but this one feels really nice on the wrist. My photo is not as crisp as some of the excellent images I have seen on this site, but wanted to contribute. I believe the Rolex brand to be one of the strongest, most recognized brands in the world and they are a pleasure to wear.

Rock On!

I've been searching for info on the different dials available on the GMT but I can't find what I'm looking for. I'd like to know when serti dials were available and what they looked like. Were there both slate and champagne like the sub? What models were the root beer dials available on and when was that last produced? Can anyone help me?

Great thread, as I am new to the forum and have decided my first vintage Rolex will be a Root Beer GMT. Think I'll stick to the Oyster bracelet for a more sleek look.

Originally I was looking at a DJ, but the history and functionality of the GMT has won me over.

My 16710 has a story that spans more than years to tell.

It was serviced in RSC Kuwait, and the technician told me he "updated" the bezel to turn only in one direction, that was in 1998. When I bought this watch in 1989, the bezel was bi-directional.

Fast forward to 2014, when through the net and forums like this one, I learned to click open the bezel. I found out the reason why by bezel rotates only in one direction. Now, after all these years, I have reason to believe, the original spring got lost during that service job in Kuwait, and my 16710 was installed a bezel spring from unidirectional model.

Here is my watch today, 2014. I am in need of a bezel insert. Anyone can please point me to the suitable replacement?

GMT Master II 24hr Hand

My original SS had a black face and red 24hr hand with a ferromagnetic alloy hairspring. My new TT has a black face with a green 24hr hand and a paramagnetic alloy hairspring.

Is there any significance to the color of the 24hr hand or is it purely cosmetic?

Unless I am mistaken, the red hand is the standard, traditional color. The green hand is meant to celebrate the GMT's 50th anniversary. Green is Rolex's corporate color.

In the Northern Hemisphere the Rolex GMT-Master may also be used as a compass. Simply point the hour hand towards the sun and automatically the red 24-hour hand will point to the North! Try it

Can someone explain this?

If the dial only says Swiss and not Swiss made then it means it's fake?

There's a GMT Master II on ebay right now which only says Swiss on the bottom of the dial. Bids are already on $4500 in it's about to finish in a few minutes.

As far as I know, "Swiss" is correct for some vintage watches, but not for the GMT II.

Good luck.

You can actually do this with ANY watch with hands. Here's a brief summary and might help to explain it for you.

Good luck.
That dial with only the word SWISS is a Luminova dial and would be correct on a GMTII made in 98 or 99. They went to Super luminova after that.

Help to ID my GMT

Hello all,
I just inherited a GMT from my grand father (He was a pilot)
I dont want to remove the bracelet to find out the serial but I think is a 16750.
So i have read a lot of good info in the forum however is a bit overwhelming for my untrained eye. Having said that this are the facts: the order of the hands are: hour, GMT, min, sec.
It doesnt have the word "date" after "perpetual"
It does have "Superlative Chronometer" and at the very bottom of the dial it says "T Swiss T" you can change the date without changing the
Hour. It wont glow in the dark and the bezel wont turn.
I wanted to know if its a 16750? What year aprox? Is it a "Bart Simpson"? Is it a "Cornino"? Is it a glossy, a matte or gilded? Does it have the "nipple" hour hand?
Do you think the dial is original or it has been changed during servicing?
Any info helps and thanks a lot!

Root beer.

Some things about it look a little unusual, but I am sure the real pros will be here soon.

Newest Addition

This is my newest and I'm not sure what I have. I'm told it's Ref 16718. Altogether a wonderful piece, mint condition, unworn and just beautiful! The Eye of The Tiger

A question for all of you GMT experts out there.......... Can you tell which movement is in a "Z serial" GMT ll without popping the case? All I find are statements like: "early Z series had the 3185, later Z series had the 3186". Does anyone know the cutoff point of the serial numbers where after ZXXXXXX all movements are 3186?

I have a couple methods to discern 3185 vs 3186 posted at https://www.minus4plus6.com/paracromblu16710.php#crown
