I bought an Explorer II a couple of weeks ago and it's now at the Dallas RSC for servicing. Here's a quick picture I took before I sent it out...

i really like that pic with the map as the background. someone also posted an EXP II on a black nato a while back which sold me on the watch. now i am patiently awaiting my black dial from mr. mailman.

Loving my EXP II black dial. Took it to the AD today to size it and appraise it. They were heaping an awful lot of praise on it and I was VERY happy with the appraisal. The EXP II was my fave in their showcase too....but I might be biased. :-)

I have always loved the look of the EXP II with the black dial. I am really considering adding one to my collection...

I am looking to purchase a Rolex soon, I always liked the submariner, yesterday I tried on my friends sub and felt it was too big for my wrist 7 1/4 After viewing this thread perhaps the explorer will be my choice for 1st Rolex. My friends have Presidents and Submariners which ive always admired, but the exp intrigues me now!

When I picked out my Explorer II, I went for the black face becuase it seemed a bit more dressy for me. Both are great watches and I am humbled to even own a Rolex. Just stinks that I may have to sell it to pay some bills :-(

EXPY II My first rolex (long)
I'm new to this forum so I just got onto this thread. I flirted with getting a Rolex since seeing my first one (GMT Master) in 1977. I had many near misses but really got serious in 1992 after coming back from the first gulf war. I was getting an old Seiko dive watch serviced and asked the watchmaker what he thought about Rolex. He told me if I should want one, I should go for the EXPY II because it had the same movement as the GMT and was the best value. In fact, he knew an AD that would let me have one for $1800. I told him to make the call, which he did immediately. I only had one problem, a new wife with child so to speak. I dragged her down to the AD (I didn't mention the price) to look at the watch. Everything went fine until the $1800 was brought up. I got a "no way" from her and that ended that. Fast forward to 2007. I had just bought my wife an expensive handbag in an upscale mall. She suggested we stop and look at Rolex's at an AD. You guessed it, she bought me that EXPII to make up for no letting me buy it all those years ago! Sorry for the crappy cell phone photo!

I picked up the EXP II as my first rolex over the submariner. I had the option of a GMT IIC also .. I went for the EXP II because of its sleekness and overall look. I'm loving every moment of it and never leaves my wrist.

White dial Exp II was my first Rolex. Had it only for a couple months before I sold and got my all time favourite Sub 16610. Exp II was nice but the Sub makes me smile..

What would you like me to say, David?
Well, I think my review on this watch just about says it all. It's a terrific watch, very versatile and practical for any layman to use. If you travel, it's very handy inspite of the fixed bezel which you don't really need anyway. This watch is still capable of reading out 2 different time-zones comfortably same as any GMT. JJ

Interesting! Field military work was the reason why I bought my Expl 2 (white face, btw)...I wanted to be able to know at a glance what time it was for my family (and when to get to a phone!)....it has held up very well in all respects (crystal, bracelet, accuracy) for almost 20 years. Alas...it needs a freshening now. The Sieko chrono I had in RVN only marginally outlasted my tours (3)...then junked after I could not find someone interested enough to fix it in 1974. There is no shortage of Rolex mechanics (nor for the other good name time pieces that I've collected). Goes to show...quality begets value...and quality costs.

I think the first version of the Exp II perhaps fitted more easily into the Rolex range. Then it was simply a very robust watch with a 24-hour hand added.

Nice thread going here! The Exp II Black dial was the very first Rolex to catch my attention. When I recently purchased my first and only Rolex, the Sub seemed to look better on my thick wrist...according to my wife. I still second guess my decision because I love the understated look of the Exp II.
Any of you out there with thicker wrists (7 1/2 +) wearing Exp IIs? |

A white Explorer II is the only currently available Rolex I'd consider.

IMHO, you couldn't go wrong with one if you are going to keep it and wear it! Its No. 1 right now on my want list too - in white. I have a 'bezel fiddle,' (I like that term, JJ), that I also love, but it is somewhat fragile (compare flying in the cockpit vs. on a bicycle).

I think this photo belongs here:
It's really the only modern Rolex I ever considered. Let's just say it 'sang' to me. :) |
