Will RBR be diminished in any way following the passing of Dietrich Mateschitz?

Unlikely, imo.

Amazing moment in F2 today for a driver who came through a hellish crash at Spa 3 years ago. This weekend is his first F2 start in more than three years, he described that he was "ready for the challenge”. He is only .5 sec behind the pole sitter (P16 on the grid).

So the risk is there even when drivers are being careful.

In 2019, Juan Manuel Correa (COR) was involved in a serious crash that killed Anthoine Hubert (the reigning 2018 F3 champion) on the second lap of the race in Belgium. COR almost died, too.

There was no dangerous driving - the cause was from contact during close racing, but that resulted in the massive crash.

So welcome back to the grid…

Just viewed this video by GRO - Indy vs. F1 - I know we had concerns earlier about the delta in Super License points for drivers.

I liked some of it and only sharing for entertainment value.

Red Bull racing team appears to be financially self-sufficient. I think they will carry on. However, the Alpha Tauri team and the junior academy system may be affected. To be able to maintain the level of success they've had requires new capital when strategic changes come up like a new engine program.

Sponsorship is long-term even though the owner has passed.

Regarding RBR financial future, I read that Deitrichs' heir is 29 or 30 years old and inherited 49% of Red Bull so controlling interest is still with the partner. DM put in place certain parameters to make sure RBR still exists in the foreseeable future.

Going back on track, it looks like they trimmed out Checo's car as he was much faster than anyone in the middle sector he's losing time in Sec 1 & 3. Although easier to pass LeClerc or anyone else if he needs to on that long straight in the middle of the lap, I'm wondering how his tire deg is going to be with less downforce, especially since Pirelli brought the softest tires tire range.

It's the last race of the season, the cars are essentially throw-aways at this point. Have fun drivers :)

With American Logan Sargeant finishing P6 in the final F2 race in Abu Dhabi, he's earned enough points for his F1 super license and will join Alex Albon in the Williams Racing team to complete the 2023 F1 grid.

Might we see VER let PER through into turn 1? If they are going to be teammates for the long haul, i think that might go a long way. Let him out front and let him run while max holds up traffic.

It would be heroic to accomplish that without being swallowed by LEC.

Starts are chaotic at best so no idea how this will go.

Don’t pop any corks just yet. Today’s race was the Sprint race. The Feature race is Sunday - and there are still ways (albeit rare ways) he could not achieve the goal. We’ll know in about 8 hours from the time I’m posting. That’s assuming the race doesn’t have incidents that land certain people in the Stewards Room like today.

Currently, SAR’s holding 30 super points of the required 40 points for a Super License

Here’s how he stands:
+20 for Formula 3 in 2020,
+7 for Formula 3 in 2021,
+3 for FP1 sessions in 2022 at Austin, Brazil, and Abu Dhabi (he missed a point in Mexico by just 5.312km below the 100km required on track - but it wouldn’t have helped - see * below)

* If he lands 7th in final F2 Championship standings then only 8 points are given (2 short of the goal). So the 1 point he missed in Mexico is irrelevant.

That means he needs a minimum of 10 points which is exactly the amount awarded to F2 Championship drivers in 6th place. (not 6th in the race, but 6th in the final standings). However, he can’t get any penalty points in tomorrow’s Feature race. Thus, race clean because penalty points lower your accrued points.

Now for the weird ways to miss the requisite 40 points:

In the F2 Sprint race today, SAR finished 6th, bringing his season points to 138. He’s still in 3rd place in the Championship.

His teammate LAW took the win, and is now at 134 points. Should LAW surmount that deficit in the Feature race, it drops SAR to 4th place in the Championship. Then the other ways to drop further in the standings…6 drivers are still mathematically able to steal places away from SAR.

These rivals will need to finish in a specific order for him to fall outside the top 6 in the F2 Championship standings.

If SAR finishes 9th in the Feature race, either VES or IWA will have to win (and IWA will need SAR not to get the fastest lap). But FIT and DAR will need to finish 2nd and 3rd (in no particular order as the two are tied on points). Behind them, DOO will have to finish 4th, and LAW will have to finish 5th.

If SAR finishes 10th in the Feature race, the above scenario will be the same, except that IWA could beat him with the win whether or not SAR gets the fastest lap. IWA will start tomorrow from pole position, that could happen.

All told, if SAR finishes 8th or above in tomorrow’s Feature race, he will get his Super Licence. He’ll be starting the race from 6th, so pending any major issues, he should be OK.

The Official Formula One Thread!

F2 race is past halfway point and SAR is struggling sitting 14th on track in mediums after mandatory pit stop. But he is not in jeopardy of the scenarios that could drop him out of 10pts. towards Super License.

DOO is out - so the weird scenarios are out of the way.

Very dangerous reason, though. After pit stop the LF wheel came off.

SAR is safe now with 5 laps to go.

Pretty much - as far as a driver in a seat - but Mercedes needs to find a reserve driver so MSC could be a good option for 2023.

He declined a DTM seat which makes sense at his age.

With 5 laps left to go, VER can help PER by slowing 1.5 sec/lap and keep LEC behind for PER to use DRS.

Will it happen?
