Its got to be fairly modern considering that its copper electroformed to the glass. Its got a signature but I couldn't find the artist when I researched it.

All I know is that nothing ever sells for above $5 at the auction this thing was at, and I had to outbid every farmers wife in the county to win this thing. Ended up setting me back like $150 and I will probably forgo doing any further research than admit to myself that I got hustled by a bunch of grandmas

Hahahahahahahah, “hustled by a bunch of Grandmas”. Don’t play bridge with them whatever you do!!

Could see a designer paying $500 for it or more if it fit in the space they needed it for.

If I’d sell the piece I would give some of the profit to the guy I bought it from and make us both happy.

Ethics is what you asked about. Business dealings for context.

But ethics also guides our sense of self-worth, too. I can tell from the story that you are in a quandary - so ask yourself “what’s fair, and what would I be comfortable doing?”

Then do it - you’ll feel better in the end.

I don't see a problem. Like others said, he set the price.

She showed up this AM, seller was beyond stoked that I was happy and it found a good home. So really hard to feel bad at this point. I found the perfect mood mat at a shop in Ann Arbor today, they even had a Coyle x Ryno(my favorite glass artist) munny on display. A bit larger/nicer than mine. But it was also priced at $7.5k.

I've contacted Coyle to see if it is indeed one of his creations, decided if the sellers happy, I'm happy, live and let live on this one. If I ever sell it, I'll likely send him some money, but I don't think that will happen in my lifetime

Cool piece! Enjoy!

I agree with the others here. He set the price, without your input. That’s what he’s willing to sell it for. I see no problem.

A totally different situation would be if you were a used coin dealer, and someone came in with a jar of valuable coins, told you they got it from a relative and they have no idea what they’re worth, and asked your expert opinion. There, an ignorant person is seeking out the advice of an expert.

I buy and sell classic cars occasionally, when I come across something that is just way under market, I say to them look you have priced it under market and I am letting you know I plan on flipping it. I may-may not make money, however I am the one taking the risk.
Haven't had anyone who cared less just wanted it out of there.

Looks like a bong.

An appraisal is not cash in hand.
I saw an appraisal on Antiques Roadshow for $2,000 on a candy tin that I regularly sold for $100-150. And not quickly at that. Appraiser had never seen one before.

The "functional" art glass is paraphernalia. Legalization of marijuana freed up disposable income previously spent on illicit sources that could be spent on ornate paraphernalia.

It is wild, how prices realized and appraisals vary some times. I've had 2 more people who specialize in glass from this era take a look, they couldn't confirm or deny my suspicions. And the artist I suspect who made it hasn't seen or responded to my messages. I've been keeping the prior owner updated with my findings which he has been stoked about. So this is actually turning out to be kind of fun and a bit more work than I expected.

It also seems that the $3.5k alot of these are priced at is the "i don't want to sell it price" and they seem to trade hands in reality more around the $1,500 range with the 2 original accessories which mine doesn't have. So the $340 I have tied into it was not a bad deal by any means, but far less of a steal than I initially thought which has made me feel much better about the situation.

I don't mind getting a good deal, I just want to be fair in the way I handle myself. And seeing how this person drew their conclusion kinda messed with my logic a bit. But after struggling to get artist confirmation myself, I can understand why he just wanted to move it along to someone who loved it. And let them figure it out from there
