Seems like a mixture of reasons including reduced production numbers, higher price, niche name (considering it as a tool watch), some have dial contrast issues (imho). Frankly they are beautiful and call to me.

I just don't like the bezel personally. Otherwise a fine watch. I would take a Sub over it though.

It's obviously a great watch but it is rarely the pick for a first Rolex so right there it isn't going to be one of the most popular.

Aside from that, functionally it's a Sub without less water resistance for more money. So for the average guy unless they particularly like the look of the YM they will probably go for the Sub, especially if they don't already own one.

Maybe the pricing on the new model hurts it? You can get a new MSRP 116710 for $8450. Retail on the new model is around $10k or so I think. I know they are totally different, but I would imagine the majority of people would take the GMTIIc over the YM

Obviously you can get a nice preowned for around $6000

Don't know why. It is a beautiful watch, but I guess it just gets overshadowed by the other watches like the Submariner and GMT Master II.

To me, it is a classy sports watch. A perfect blend of sportiness and dressiness. It may not be for everyone, but for those who own this stunning timepiece will understand and appreciate what it has to offer.

I think its a great watch. For me the issue is that the majority of people who go for one watch will go for the Sub. Partly because every AD will have a Sub in stock and the other reason is a lack of awareness on the YM model. I think a lot of guys who have a YM already have more than one watch and the YM gives you similar functionality with a different feel. I would have the new blue dial model but the Hulk is one or two places ahead in the queue.

How does the 16622 feel weight wise over a 16610 or a 116710?

I personally love mine. Might be 'unpopular' because of the high price tag for a majority stainless model.

It may be un-popular as compared to the Sub - a watch that has been around for many decades and has become the gold standard for all sport watches, not to mention the most copied watch on the planet. No watch, the YM included, can hold a candle to that. The only other watch that could even be mentioned in the same breath in terms of overall popularity is the DateJust, and that's even a far, distant second.

Popularity as compared to the Sub has no bearing on the quality, beauty or style of the YM. If popularity as compared to the Sub was the measuring stick for how "good" a watch is, all other watches would be garbage, and that's obviously not the case. If you've got a sweet spot for the YM, get it. The blue dial variant is on my short list of watches to be acquired in the not-so-distant future.

I have both blue and platinum dials and love the Yacht-Master.
I believe they are less popular only because the are so expensive (new), and they take a big hit in resale value right after they are sold by the AD. I got my used and minty 16622 for about the same price of a comparable used 16610 (Sub-date). For me, that is a bargain!

They do seem to take a hit when new, I found one on TRF for $6125 2007 complete, not a bad deal.

My problem is I like the 116710 GMT and the 16613 Blue Sub too

Not sure what one to get tho?????

It does have faint scrapping marks on the leather strap due to spring bar holes are closer to the case. The strap is Hadley Roma distressed leather SAND color. Sorry I don't have any other pictures.

They are not bad looking, although I believe the look of the Sub, DJ and GMT's are more widely appealing to the masses. For me personally, the bezel is the least appealing aspect of them. With that said, they are very eye-catching and to me look better than anything I've seen from the competition.

Wore a YM with the blue dial this past weekend that belongs to a friend. It wears very nicely on my wrist.

It's a nice watch, but has stiff competition in the "Submariner Deluxe" category, namely the TT blue and black dial Subs. Also, the bezel -- the numbers are big and maybe reminiscent of TAG? JMHO

I LOVE the YM I Not so much the new "busy looking" II.

In fact if I wanted to spend a "few" thousand more I could have bought my favorite Rolex, Blue Face YM. At the end of the day I went with simplicity and and newer more popular common Submariner.

I just can't wrap my head around an $8500 watch that does not have the following the Submariner does. Going from $160 Seiko to a $6000 Rolex seemed silly. But I love the watch and more so the way it makes me feel. Kind of like the Vette,

Plus I don't own a yacht and did spend six years on Submarines in the Navy back in the day

Hmmm Let's See

Soo Many interesting and exceptional things about the Yachtmaster. I am just stating things I have read, hopefully most are correct...

In 1999 at Basil World the Rolesium 16622 40mm Yachtmaster was introduced.

Other tool watches at the time had Hollow Links and the Yachty' had Solid end Links and Polished Center Links. Sub was mostly unpolished

It was nicer, (to some) than the Submariner in that it had Curved Lugs like the Daytona, and less pronounced back to sit more comfortably.

It had the Maxi Dial with Green Lume and Solid Platinum Bezel and Dial, with White gold markers.

Triple Lock Crown and large polished Crown Guards.

And one of the last major components is the movement. A Rolex 3135, like the Sub, that has a great reputation and is a workhorse.

So, for these reasons and more I haven't listed, I chose the Ym 16622 as my first Rolex which I will never sell...

It's a GREAT watch. I used to own one. Just moved on to other pastures. I don't think its disdained I just don't think its one that appeals to masses rather than guys who are WIS types. It fliesnunder the radar but I always viewed it as a sub deluxe.
