You can buy a knock-off from a street vendor at the corner of Bloor and Bay in Toronto for $25. Since owners of that POS don't care about actually time telling... I'd say it's $25 well spent.

I really do, talking to JJ, he seems happy with the two he has. He will always have the wandering eye, we all do to some extent. Though I think this one will be in his family for quite awhile.

I hope so too, actually, since I need a black ExpII brudda in arms.

I would prefer to see JJ either add a TT Daytona to his collection, rather than dump one of his current two.

Yep I agree, and although we spared in fun over my white Exp II, I'd buy the black next time! I like white dials on DJs, but now I think Rollie sports watches are meant to have black dials.

I agree 100%, unless we are talking vintage GMT.

I'm with you, Bruce. Black dials on sport watches are the way to go. Although there is one exception that comes immediately to mind. And that's the Breitling Olympus. I tried the black dial flavor and the subdials were too hard to read. It's the same problem I have with my GP ww.tc. It looked great in the pictures, but you can't read the subdial hands very easily.

I've been singing this song for years now. IMHO the only sports Rolex that can pull-off a white dial is the SS Daytona, although I prefer the black dial.

The only white dial Rolex I'd want is the old GMT that was made for Pan Am desk jockeys.

That's interesting looking! Bet they're really valuable, but I'd rather have a black one. Thanks John!

Sorry, John. The white face just doesn't cut it on the GMT. It's OK on the YM, but here, it washes out. And the GMT really needs the red 24 hour hand. That's what makes it distinctive.

I believe they were produced in one batch of about 100 or so around about 1955 or so. you can see the case doesn't have crown guards, which became part of the GMT case around 1959 or so. There are two things that bother me about this pic. I think the 4th hand (while faded heavily - Ed they were bright red) may not be original. GMTs from the 50s had a smaller arrowhead at the end and this is more in keeping with a 60s-type hand. Maybe it was replaced in service at some point. Similarly, the bezel is all black, and given that there were produced for Pan Am execs, it should have the red/blue bezel.

As you can imagine, they are very rare and command a huge premium. Last time I heard one went up at auction it commanded around US$30,000.

Hmm, I personally prefer the white Exp II - I think white goes better with the steel bezel.
