I pay because I want to, not because I feel obligated to... If I feel I'm being 'played' however, the story changes.

Sorry guys, but i'm with Amanda on everything she said. Geez, in fact, you sound exactly like my wife. I'm lucky I married the best woman for me in the whole world. (she's looking over my shoulder as I type this)

That "Date Men then" comment was just hilarious!!

I also say, guys... if you dont want to pay for everything, then you should bring up this subject early on in the peace so both parties know where they stand. Communicate... if you cant communicate early on then forget about the future!

I'm sure some women dont expect anything from you... they may not even think about it or know how to approach the whole 'go dutch' thing.
Absolutely! Chivalry is a two-way street. There's no feeling of obligation, and if a woman feels like buying me a present then I'm not going to refuse. Hell no! These "rules" such as they are cut both ways. I'm just not sure this has anything to do with the damaged watch.

I think there was an 'insinuation' that the only reason the original poster was going halvies was because he damaged a girls watch.. or something to that affect.

As you said Peter, if you damage someone's property then no matter who it is... the right thing to do is fix it. If only people were more careful about NOT opening their door into my car now that pi$$e$ me off heaps!

btw, the intent of my original post had nothing to do with ethics--it just had to do with whether chips could be buffed out of crystals or not:)

We know Chris...its all cool, none of the banter above was really to do with your original post... the mere fact you posted this thread shows you have good morals (and a tough SD ) this was a hijack of the non-tosser type = unusual around here

Welcome to the internet... My use of the word 'chivalry' apparently triggered some sour grapes. Regardless of the OT hijacking going on, I find this interesting.

I had the whole allegedly paternalistic and sexist male-drives-lifts-carries-picks-up-buys-dinner-door-opening-not-swearing-honour-protecting-female-worshipping indoctrination and I'm grateful for it. It's a bit outdated and quaint according to some but not according to others. The world has lots of different people in it, thank God.

That off my chest, I can tell you, I'm not sure what any of this has to do with scratching someone else's watch. No idea. I'm tempted to read the whole thread, but maybe later. I get the drift though; boy meets girl, boy scratches his Rolex on her Rolex, girl's Rolex dinged, boy feels obliged to cough up. Debate on gender socialisation follows, and gets blended with horological repair ethic. It happens every day. I'm surprised someone hasn't written a song about it.

I'd do exactly the same thing, and I wouldn't go halves. I'd take the watch and have the thing fixed. Simple. I do that for a male or a female. You break something, you fix it. Easy. The presence or absence of a vagina is not part of that rule as far as I can see.
Peter. You are so funny.

And YES, I actually do pay on dates. I think going dutch is cheesy. However, I do like it when on a first date the girl at least asks me if she can help with the tab.

First off, you have had a very intimate contact...your Rolexes crashing into one another in such a manner. Your Rolex, however, is bigger and stronger than hers, so I think, especially if you like this lady, I would just ask for the watch and get it fixed. Your watch can create more havoc on other watches than hers can, and even if there was contribution by her, so what. It is not that big a thing to fix, and you will feel good about yourself. If you really like this lady, then get her a Explorer that will stand up to your bully of a watch better.

I agree with Arturo, although that was never the question. This started as a simple "to-buff-or-not-buff" Q and A. According to the beauty of TRF, it has become a fascinating socio-horological discourse, with detours into the dark recesses of our psyches.

God, I love this forum.

Good Lord. Someone mentioned its 90 bucks for a fix. Just get it fixed for her. No halves or splitting the cost with her.

i want to pay for it just to be a good friend. i spend more than the crystal replacement cost at dinner frequently--the moneys not important. the question is how to get it off her wrist

Now that's where the chivalry comes in... use the same approach any male does when he's trying to get a lady to remove something... LIE!

Or you could buy her a Seiko monster for $70 and play conkers with your SD.

Conkers: Game played with specially prepared chestnuts and a string.

Simple. Tell her you're a cross-dresser who has recently decided to embrace your needs. You'll need the caveat that your alter-persona is also keen on good watches, and not bothered with small imperfections like a scratched face.

Women are generally very sympathetic to this sort of foible. Once the initial surprise has passed, she'll be touched by your honesty, and admire you for dealing with your needs so openly. Women are capable of chivalry too.

The next sound you'll hear will be that of the clasp opening as she hands it to you earnestly, mixed with the muted sniffle of her tears of admiration. You too must sniffle for dramatic unity; not too much. A silent, appreciative nod with half smile will be the coup de gras.

It's a touch elaborate, but I'm sure you'll get the watch. If this works, it'll also get this thread up to about 4000 pages. Don't be concerned if she sends you some tasteful sun-frocks for around the house.

Best of luck my good man. The watch is as good as fixed.

Good cheer and toffee sauce. Maybe a little cognac as well...

Absolutely right.

It was the man's watch that caused the damage, after all. Not to offer is ungentlemanly.

That's why we keep you around, Peter. To put FINI to the circular hijacking that sometimes goes on - as here.
