People claim that since the AP has a lower vibration/hour (21,600) - it is said that the movement isn't as accurate and the second hand doesn't move as smooth.
Any impressions? |

Apparently the VC OS is in-house now (as of the newest model), or so I have seen posted in a few places.
It matters to me! I only collect pieces whose movements are "in-house." I like my pieces to be entirely representative of a company. Does it matter to you? No idea... Knowing it is in-house now, and the AP is not (though I am going on what someone else said on this thread and haven't researched it), I would not get either one. I don't like the odd oversize sub-dial on the VC, and the AP is not in-house... |

I'd much rather have the AP. Tried the VC on bracelet in Vegas a couple of months ago. Didn't like the bracelet and don't care much at all for the logo buckle or the bezel.
I love some of their dressier offerings but not really the sport options. I'd definitely rather wear a Daytona than the VC. |

I like the AP but tried on the VC 2 weeks ago and was surprised how comfortable it was.

So I called Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet tonight.
VC - movement is by Frederic Piguet, even the new model. They expect to be fully "in-house" movements within 2-5 years. That's fact. AP - movement is in-house - 21,600 vph as is with the VC. Patek has the same vph on their nautilus. So based on the fact that VC is using a Swatch company to manufacture their movement and that they expect to make an in-house movement in the next few years, I'm thinking it might be a purchase down the road. At this point, I'm ruling it out. Going to AP tomorrow to make up my mind. Chrono or no? |

AP chrono uses Frederic Piguet movement too, and not sure there's a plan to create an in-house movement. When I spoke to one of the NYC boutique staff, he felt that creating and using an in-house movement would increase the watch's cost considerably (making it similar to some of their other complications), and he felt they probably want to keep the chrono at the current more competitive price.

My impression is: They may not have a choice unless they get bought by swatch group? The only reason many watch companies are creating an in house movement is because swatch is locking them out. Most of them had no interest in that end of the market. Anyone who understands better please chime in.

I know the Jules Audemar Chrono uses an in-house movement and I almost bought one before deciding to go with a used platinum Lange & Sohne Datograph. Why not look at some of the Lange chronos? Beautiful pieces and all in-house. I could spend all day looking at the movements.... |

AP vs VC, A. Lange & Sohne wins
That A.Lange Datograph is beautiful. Nicer than the AP and the VC. It looks like VC took the date display idea from A.Lange. Other than that, the VC bracelet looks gaudy, the strap looks better. The AP feels more comfortable to me. In any case, depending on price I am going to investigate the A.Lange Datograph. WOW. Thanks for posting

Old thread but if you have the funds then the Dato is the ultimate chrono for me. I however would not sell my ROC for one, I hope to add the Dato for my perfect chrono pairing.

I'd go with the AP in this case.

If the OP is interested in the origins of the movement and really wants a chrono and really wants stainless then I'd go with a Nautilus. |

Quite the bump indeed...
I'd get the AP personally. I love VC's big date window and it has some very interesting details on the case and bracelet but size-wise the AP would suit me better. ...Of course, if ALS gets considered I'd prefer it as I'm more of a dress watch man but that's another story.

The VC looks great but I find it too "dressy", the AP for me can be worn with shorts, jeans, suits... just about anything!

AP anyday.. its aesthetically more sound, conveniently classy and remarkably eye catching compared to the VC.
the VC is not an iconic model.. its something that may come and god however the AP royal oak is a timeless beauty. its my opinion and i too am thinking to pull the trigger on the AP RO chrono 41mm white. Cheers! |

I've owned both and for daily wear the VC will hold up much better from life's bumps and bruises. If you don't mind scratches I think the ROC is beautiful. I was always aware of this when I wore the ROC and never got comfortable with it. The VC seemed easier and a bit more comfortable to wear. It'll scratch also, but it doesn't seem to show as much.

Based on this post, which I started on 11/15/12, I ended up with these:
