Absolutely this....and having the GMT will probably change your future requirements.

This is a generally a good idea because then if you don't like it, it's an easy flip to another.

GMT first. And as far as the speedy or the OP, I would do some thinking...

GMT first then see where it leads you.

Of those three OP, I would say 90% of members here will say the GMT first. It is an iconic watch and probably the most versatile.

It's also the hardest one to get your hands on.

I'm surprised by all the "GMT first responses"... My hunch is that there's a big group of tool watch supporters in the mix and they see the GMT as being not only versatile, but tough, too.

If it were me, I'd go with an Explorer I first. It's in the Oyster 39 case and has the 3-6-9 to add a little sporty flair. It also has an all brushed bracelet, a very slim case and a more versatile look that truly can move between dress and sport situations with ease.

If you start with the Explorer (or standard OP 39), it's likely to be a keeper that you learn from... If you can live with no date, you know you can survive with a Speedy. If you crave a bigger bulkier case, you can add the GMT.

I personally think the Explorer or OP is a better toe in the water before making the big plunge. But, that said, I also think it could be the one to endure whatever change you may make to the collection over time.

Just my $0.02. Any way you choose to go with these three will be great -- this is an awesome group to choose from.

This is the order I like too. Definitely the GMT first though.

OP first because the other two will still bug you. Speedy next again because the GMT will continue to haunt your thoughts. Finally, at last the GMT.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do like the Explorer I 39 a lot, and think it would be a good introduction into the Rolex brand.

This was my method of thinking, as I was trying to plan out my next move. The OP and the Speedy motivating me to move toward the prize over time. I was very surprised to see so many responses to go with the GMT first.

This ....If you are like myself or most of the people on TRF for that matter. You will most likely find a new watch to lust over every few months or so. Starting with the GMT you can't go wrong.

In what order would you buy these?

I would start with the GMT (I prefer the BLNR) for a few reasons. Firstly, it could very well dissuade you from needing to invest in any other watches. It is a quintessential sports Rolex model and glides seamlessly from the beach to the boardroom and anywhere in between. As good a shot at a one watch collection as you may have. Secondly, it has the most functional complications. The OP is a cool time only watch, the Speedy has a storied history as a chrono but I do not know how often you'll be timing laps or anything else. However, it is likely that you do travel and that makes the GMT function potentially the most useful for you. Finally, you won't be punished for changing your mind. In watch collecting we all make mistakes. We buy something that looks great online or we want to love, but for whatever reason it just doesn't work. If that happened to you with the BLNR, you could get out as close to whole as possible, not likely with the other two.

TL:DR Buy the BLNR first and see where that takes you

When you get to the Speedy, it's got to be early, pie pan, applied logo, DON, pre moon, 68-69, flat foot crown etc. Speedy's will bury you with details and for a watch geek, that is the game. I don't own one yet, but will. I love the look of the Valjoux, both 321 and 861, the 861 being the class techno act, although nothing prettier than the 321. So much to learn. Oh and the Moon Only book will separate your brain into a million pieces. So much history to tell through the Speedmaster.

Nicely said. Can't argue with this logic.

to me, buy whichever you want the most first, because most likely your taste will change by the time you want the 2nd.

If can't decide from that, then I would go with the most expensive you can afford first, because then makes it a little easier to save up for the next.

GMT, OP, Speedy.

By the time you get to the speedy however, your love for Rolex may be all consuming.

I'm curious as a guy that is new to Rolex, how have the used and new prices been changing in the last 2-3 years? I have had somewhat of a pulse on the Speedmaster Professional market over that time, and the prices of clean, used examples have increased around 40%. Is the same true for the Rolex models mentioned?

I ask because, if not, it might make sense to find a great deal on a Speedy first. I apologize if I am way off base with that thinking. I am very much a novice in the Rolex world.

Get the GMTII and forget those other's. Then start saving again for either another Rolex sports model or sell the GMTII and with the proceeds and new cash get a Patek.
