I’ve only been in the one on Michigan Ave. when I was up last. They were locked up but let me in without an appt. I just stopped to see what they had in, if anything.

There was nothing in the storefront/cases at all. They were pretty rude to be quite honest.
They gave me the “we only sell to locals” line. Which is what it is.

I get the no supply. I just don’t understand the rudeness.

And they’ve got the new bigger store they are building on the opposite side of the street. Maybe when they move in, they’ll have more space to keep no watches in.

I heard several people come through AD while I was waiting "I'll give you my credit card right now"... everyone seems to think the display models are negotiable.

This must vary from dealer to dealer. I tried on exhibition models at my AD. Its just to see if the model fits your wrist. Man thingsvare getting bad.

We are starting to see a bizarre trend of AD’s that have ‘exhibition’ pieces that won’t allow people to try them on or handle them. This is like the third or fourth time I have read this on the internet in the last week. It’s strange and I don’t doubt it one bit.

The dealer tried to argue with you? Are you sure it isn't the other war round?

Some exhibition watches are dummies. Some are real. I would call the former exhibition models and the latter demo models. There is a difference. When I was last at my AD they were "exhibition" watches and they were blanks. They might have some working demo models in now, I won't know until I next visit.

When you are being told they are only empty cases and one of the empty cases second hand is clearly ticking away you bet I’m going to call them on it. Am I supposed to pretend like I’m a fool? Not me.

A problem for whom?

It's a watch that isn't for sale...why argue about what's inside the watch? I thought the latest word was many of them had essentially complete guts but disconnected crowns.

Some posts on TRF are simply just ..... idio...c

.
Back in the day, you could just walk in any AD and try Rolexes on as many times you wanted and walk out.....that simple....now...not that simple apparently ~ ~

maybe you are just paraphrasing for the sake of brevity, but there is no way they told you or anyone else that the watches in their case "are fake."

The most reliable (but not perfect) way to tell if someone doesn’t qualify to be allocated desirable references?

They are looking in or hanging around the Rolex display cases. (Sorry, don’t shoot the messenger.)

It sounds like maybe they pegged you as someone they didn't want as a customer and you proved them right. I suppose you had to be there.

If this happened here in Chicago, your mistake was probably not offering the AD a beef sandwich before attempting to interact with them.

Remember: nothing gets done in Chicago without a sufficient amount of food being consumed first. If you're looking to buy, you'd better have an Italian beef or 2-3 loaded Chicago dogs at the ready. Even if you were just there to browse, any negative pushback you received was your own fault if you didn't at least offer to split a large order of cheese fries with the AD (and don't forget to grease the palm of the security guy with a Portillos coupon.)

My AD recently received a shipment of display watches and their cases were full for the first time in several years.

Their watches appeared to all have working movements, but my sale associate treated them like sold pieces and was a little reluctant to allow me to touch them.

I was able to try on several models, but he made me handle them over the tray like I was going to drop them. I assumed the display watches were meant to be handled and would show signs of handling over time, but the SA’s actions make me believe they would be sold at some point.

Very odd behavior for supposed demo pieces.

After trying several, he pulled my card to update my model preferences and spent 15 minutes asking me if I had an interest in nearly every hot SS model. I felt like I was wasting my time and then several days later, I received a card in the mail, thanking me for my interest and he would do what he could to help me with my wish list.

Strange times!
