I had two people come up to me in the last couple months asking about the aquanaut and one guy who was with his wife/girlfriend said he'd been looking/wanting one for awhile and asked if I got mine from the local AD. We nerded out awhile about watches and I took it off so that he could try it on. It's always fun to talk shop with fellow watch enthusiasts. As we parted ways my wife laughed and remarked that I was an idiot for letting the guy wear it. I told her naw I sized him up beforehand and could easily take him down in a foot race. haha

So what is the first words that people say to you when you show them your watch?

Only once in the 20 years I have known him has he ever asked to see a watch I was wearing and it was an IWC chrono years ago.

He’s seen me wearing much cooler and rarer watches but never asked to see them and therefore not shown.

The OPs post is worded in a way where it seems like they’re flashing their watch around hoping random people comment on it.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Showing your watch to complete strangers is crazy.

Who does that? lol

But if you can’t show your watch to your friends, then they’re probably not your friends anyway…

I guess. But unsolicited you go up to someone who doesn’t like fishing and you say hey bro check out this sweet bait caster!

I like guitars and amps, but I don’t randomly go to friends that could care less hey check out this 10 top quilt Michigan maple PRS. They’re not going to know what it is and they’ll think you’re lame.

Hey check out my Rolex! Nah.

I would be interested in the PRS, your amps and gear. Very much so. But you might think I wouldn’t be…

I'm in the "I don't show it off to anyone" camp. I'd be surprised if someone had the gall to ask "iS tHaT a ReAl RoLeX?!?!" At the risk of sounding elitist: I don't associate with people who'd think twice.

The only reactions I get are 1: when I walked into an AD and the SA said something like "wow, a Smurf! Haven't seen one of those in a while!" He was wearing a green Submariner Date. 2: At local WIS-style events where people are wearing similarly-cool pieces.

It depends if its male or female

Male usually react something like "wow, how did you get that? paid retail?" and if at retail "where"....

Female, in 8 out of 10 cases would skip the above foreplay and just ask me "what are you doing tonight?".

Thats the only reason I keep buying Rolex watches..

Great watch!

I had the same experience, no one ever commented on my watches but last time I was at my local AD and showed them my GMT Meteorite I saw all the sales reps who wanted to see it. Most of them had never saw one at that location. It was all WOW!

The wife has had more comments about the Tudor blue 79090 she wears than I’ve ever had any of the watches I wear . Best was when we were in the Rolex AD in NYC & I was trying on some different watches & the salesperson saw her watch & said can I please try it on I’ve never seen such a lovely watch, & then asked if she could show her colleagues the watch .

Kind of annoying and I find ways to navigate around giving a solid answer, but I think to most non-watch enthusiasts, price the only thing they really care about with nice watches.
Seems that you know. lot of people that were not taught not to ask prices of things.

Most know only Rolex is $$$$$$ than real cost.

When people I don’t know ask about price of anything I say “A lot of work”

or it was a gift, which a couple were.

I wear my watches and i know most will think they are $$$, and I prefer t when they say nice watch…which means a more truthful statement.

Solid gold Rolex watches are certainly eye popping, but must stay quiet regardless just wandering eyes…Other other of watches like Cartier or PP get better comments, about just being beautiful watches, which is nice to hear, because I agree and fell fortunate, which is my response. “Fortunate to have a nice collection.”

But hide them all in public, ubers, walking around , etc…

Only 2 times have my watch been commented on. Both times I was wearing a NTH.

How many times have a watch been noticed? Who knows.

If someone wants the time, I pull out my phone. Or tell them to pull out their phone.

I worked in a very busy place with guys around. Most watch talk I over heard was about smart watches, even though I know people who wear Tags, Omega, and Rolex are there all the time.

But overall, no one cares.

Someone noticing my watch doesn’t happen very often. When someone does notice…typically it will range from nice/beautiful watch, to, holy sh**…depending on the watch I’m wearing and the level of WIS that noticed it.

Here is an example of where I commented on a watch to a random stranger. At Vegas F1 last year I was camped out at a roulette table for most of the day and a guy and his friend came up to play. The guy was wearing what looked like a Patek 5740, and the friend had a black sub date.

Now seeing a Patek 5740 (potentially) not an everyday thing. So I said hey nice watch, is that a perpetual? He said yes, and then he lost about 2 grand in 5 minutes and left.

His friend with a regular sub, no comment, and likewise no comment on the Santos I had on then.

After they left the dealer was asking me what the deal was with that watch and why I asked about it.

Thing is, nobody was “showing me their watch”. Everyone was wearing watches not showing them.

Rarely happens, but typically these two questions:

"Is it a Rolex?"

"How much did it cost?"

I’ll routinely strike up conversation with someone wearing a nice watch. Sometimes the person is not an enthusiast and the conversation dies down but they appreciate the compliment.

Once in a while I can tell they are uncomfortable and I just cut off the discussion. It’s not a big deal to me to make some people uncomfortable when most enjoy the conversation.

I will say it’s a lot easier when I’m wearing a Rolex rather than a g shock, which is what I mostly wear to work conferences.

I don't show my watches to others as that's kinda like bragging.
If I know them well and know they are a true WIS that is another story.
Most people don't care about watches

My thoughts exactly. People do notice the Wimbledon, on occasion, and just say, “Is that a Rolex?” Truthfully, I wish they wouldn’t.

Is it wrong to feel guilty replying "yes, it's a real Rolex"..... I've had that experience a couple of times now.... Other than that, watches seem to fly under the radar for me.

I was in the local Whole Foods this past Saturday and the girl who was stocking ice cream said "I really like your watch - it goes great with your shirt and sweater"! I had my Todor GMT with the opaline dial and had a blue and maroon shirt/sweater. It was not planned.
Last person I would expect to notice.

I would have asked her out on a date, but my wife was in the car.
