That definitely looks like a semi-transparent taut nylon thread running through some kind of metal ring and parallel to a steel rod.

It's interesting to note that the hole on the green "thingy" is not centralised!! Wonder why?

Jim you got it right

It is a new quick release skewer, it is the first one I have ever seen made with a carbon fibre axle. It is 19g and is a new bicycle product from Germany.

1220570734_resized.jpg

It is made by a company called Tune and are called a U20 quick release axles. It is IMHO pretty risky to have a carbon fibre axle (although it is not weight bearing), it has an endpiece that is glued to the aluminium cam and so if the glue lets go.........

Congratulations

It required too much out of the box thinking for me because the quick-release itself doesn't look like anything on my own bike.

But what is this then?

Foot air pump?

Purdey is a shotgun manufacture, but that looks like nothing I have ever seen on mine. . .

And likewise that QR looks nothing like anyone I have ever seen. I would not trust it on one of my bikes.

I just think I may know the answer to this one. I'm sure I read about this in a Sunday newspaper supplement a long while ago.

Is it some super fancy expensive belt buckle?

We have a winner! And so soon. This is a belt buckle made by Roland Iten. It contains 105 moving parts and this, the least expensive one, retails for...... wait for it..... 15 thousand Euro

Know what you mean, toph. Looks like some kinda fancy flip-up sight from an unmentionable shooting device!

I feel the same way about the first photo; early on I was toying with quick release skewers, but even now that I know what it is, I still don't understand how the whole thing works!

That is easy:

While pressing button A, pull lever 1 back to the first position until you hear a click. Then, whilst pressing buttons B and C simultaneously, lift lever 2 and slide back catch 1. This will enable you to lift the whole belt carrier as described on page 124 of the manual. With the belt carrier mechanism in the most upright position, release buttons B and C again. This will engage the belt seating mechanism so that you can loosen the belt after you have followed steps 24 to 65 in chapter 18 of the manual! Easy peasy!

Not a chainset (but close) and not a belt buckle. Just give the right answer Toph so we can get something more interesting.
