The Third Watch

Was heading to Antarctica again, walked past the AD and this was in the window. Bought it there and then. Has gone on to become my favourite watch. Been serviced as got totally trashed over the years. But is the best.

I remember this photo from the first thread; it still puzzles me. What was the reflection on? Pretty bright out for 3:00AM as well.

hi Steve,
as a professional explorer- when it comes to picking an optimal watch dial, is the black dial more suitable over the white? (and for whom is the white dial more suitable for?)

i thought i read in your previous thread that the black dialed GMT and Explorer 2 are best suited for legibility; in that case then, who would the white dial appeal to?

I find it ironic that it is dubbed the Polar Explorer- if the black dialed watch is better suited for the job (by the real polar Explorers)

Hi.
Good question. I have used the black dial and white dial explorer twos' in the artic and Antarctic. in my experience the black dial is better. stand out more against the snow. Note Rolex does not refer to the white dial as polar, just the people that buy them. I have both, personal opinion. but black is better.

The Fourth Watch

The sea dweller,
Always wanted one, Actually bough off a grey dealer first, took the usual hammering. Went off for service from the AD. Yet on its way back the van got hijacked. so the AD gave me a new one they had in stock.

The Fifth Watch

My dad loved watches, and over the years had many different ones. When i got back from the South Pole, for Christmas he gave me this. An IWC Pilots watch, limited edition Spitfire. Its a gorgeous understated piece.

The sixth watch

Then my dad died. The only hero i have ever known. He died with an explorer on his wrist; which my mum took off and gave to me. I still miss his counsel even now. More so over the last 6 years, when i wish he had been here to to tell me what to do.

You should have stopped there! The only watch one would ever really need. An Explorer. And your father’s watch.
