Rolex is not an athletic watch. May have been at some time, but it is not anymore. Too many better options, Garmin, G Shock, etc.

someone who just really loves running - doesn't wear a watch
fitness junkie, or someone who loves social media - fitness watch so they can pore over those lovely stats, or post them on facebook or instagram someone who's jogging (actually just walking), not really into fitness but forced to exercise by spouse or doctor - wears a mechanical watch |

I wouldn't even think of doing that. A fit bit or something similar works running

Nope. When running it’s either my Garmin Fenix 3, Suunto Spartan Ultra or Polar Grit X.

I don't like any extraneous stuff on me when I run. Nothing in my pockets, yada. So no watch at all when running. About all I take it off for is to sleep. And one other activity.

jogging wont do anything to a rolex, even marathon running will do nothing look at the arm movement of the pros.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZuzdJ5H13k i runned couple of times and no seen any ill effect nor running fast of the timing. but i have garmin fenix 3 hr too, my lighter and gps tracking haha :) Until Rolex invents the gps and hr monitor clasp i will stick with digital. |

I usually wear my G-Shock while exercising, but I have by accident worn my Tudor and Omega to the gym. I feel weird exercising with a 4k watch on my wrist.

Garmin Epix when running to track my heart rate and VO2 Max although my phone logs my runs on Strava.

Reviving this a bit, because I love the subject!
I walk, run, and cycle quite a lot. I very much subscribe to the idea of wearing what works best for you. When I'm out for a nice summer time stroll, I'll wear my Rolex. I love catching it at different angles in the daylight and admiring it. Running and cycling though, I use an Apple watch. With running, I've tried to jog with my Air King but the weight of it on my wrist was too distracting to me (I can only imagine how it would be with a heavier watch). The Apple watch is lighter, and I can also more easily track my distance and listen to music while I run. Cycling is a sport I've always avoided wearing my Rolex. I don't even like to bring my mobile phone cycling. I don't want to risk it falling out somewhere or getting busted up if I drop it. I use an apple watch in case I need to make an emergency call, and leave the phone at home. Sure, it means I can't snap those rare photos of a gorgeous landscape on top of a mountain but hey, it's about being in the moment, not the 'gram! For pacing, distance, route map, etc., I use a cycling computer. I'd really love to wear my Rolex running or cycling but for me it's not practical.

I would choose the right tool for the job. So, not a Rolex or any other mechanical watch. Either a Garmin or nothing.

Less is more for me when running. Socks/shoes/shorts/apple watch to track pace and stream music/airpods (shirt/half zip if it's cold)
Couldn't imagine running in my white gold sub

If you are worried about getting robbed, insure it.
I have a watch 17x more expensive than a sub. If I ever get robbed, I'm happy to hand it over and get a new one. Insure stuff that you can't afford to replace. Common sense 101. |

Garmin for running. Also use Breitling for some runs when I don’t need my HR, pace and distance.

One problem with that approach is that some watches are very hard to replace. Try replacing a stainless steel Rolex sports watch. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Good point. Also, if you hit the pavement as I’ve done a few times (getting clipped in a race, sliding on schmutz or slippery surface in rain) then the damage to the Rolex is a lot more than the purpose-built Casio or AW. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Wanted to say I appreciate this thread so much more than the “should I buy a sub or Daytona” threads. Learning a lot—Bas runs ultras it looks like and people have some good ideas when running. I sometimes have these broken up runs where my running watch can’t start fast enough but oddly my Daytona would. I am going to try that this weekend.

Sorry if that came across as overly-critical.
But I am always surprised when people live in a flood zone or get hit by a hurricane, lose it all, but have no insurance coverage. I live in an area with the potential for both. I buy max coverage, just in case. Or more relevant here, get robbed or lose expensive watches that are not insured. Accidents can happen and assume they will. But I'm an old guy from a by-gone era. |

Hah..NO SERIOUS runner is going to be running without a Garmin Forerunner or Fenix or Instinct (or Suunto).
I'm one and I use my Fenix 6 24x7 (only getting the Rolex cos I always wanted one). Not only is my fenix comfortable during runs, the amount of health data in real time like cadence, stride, miles run, recovery time, laps and of course GPS map run is UNBEATABLE by any luxury watch in the world. It's not about showing off I can run with a Rolex but it's all about my health and how to perfect my runs in the long run. Not only that, I can use the historical data and plan my next run accordingly. In the end, any luxury mechanical watch is mainly a piece of jewelry. Heck, some models don't even tell the basic like date..lol. |

I run a 5k every other day. I wear my SubC and Panerai PAM 959 when running. Always have and always will.
