I used to love huge watches, but as I have grown older much less so. Some very large watches now seem almost clownish whereas the Sub and similar are definitely more stylish, elegant and timeless in design.

This, I have the same wrist size and the SD43 was the perfect choice but this is a tricky thing since OP stated his eyes are being used to 44mm watches which it dwarfs anything smaller at first but those eyes will soon adapt and the 41mm sub will start looking good.

Exactly my thoughts! I recently went to an Explorer I, and it’s just right. Comfortable, low profile, but easy to read the time. Wonder why it didn’t occur to me sooner:-)
