The Three Boxes of Life

The Three Boxes of Life — Education, Work, Retire in that order
or:
Mix it up. Education, Retire, Work, Education, Retire, Work, Education, Work…

Mid-60s, no degree, El Camino College, Torrance, CA
AA, 1971, El Camino College, Torrance, CA
Hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, 1979, a life altering adventure.
AA, 1992, El Camino College, Torrance, CA
Various Certificates of Accomplishment, El Camino College, Torrance, CA
BA, 1995, UC Berkeley
All of which eventually led to
2012, Retirement from UC Berkeley

Somewhere in this journey I read Bolles’ “Three Boxes of Life” and wondered whether or not he had been spying on me.

Irrespective of a course of study, the most important and influential aspect of attending university has been the people I met and the associations I made outside of class. Those people and those associations 25 years later continue to open doors that never would have been available had I not gone to university much less dropped out because, you know, "Bill gates dropped out and he could buy a Rolex factory."

Explorer 114270 -- Retirement from UC Berkeley after 15 years - 10%; Graduation from UC Berkeley at 52 - 15%; Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail - 75%
Explorer II 16570 -- Because it's cool

I have an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA with a project management major.

I currently wear a DJ36 and a 5 digit Sub.

I also no longer work in a field related to my post-secondary edumacation - go figure.

I disagree...it's interesting to me to understand like-minded peoples' backgrounds, interests, education, and professions. I am especially interested in different backgrounds that defy the the norm (ie no college).

BBA, University of Texas Arlington
MBA, UMASS Amherst

With the cost of college tuition. I’m scratching my head how a recent grad, could afford a Rolex. Let alone basic living expenses.

College degree did nothing for me, pretty much got it to make my parents happy after we immigrated here to the US. Make a lot more money selling real estate than than all my college buddies that are using their degrees. Only Rolex in my collection is a Pepsi. Degree I got was a bachelors in Architectural Engineering.
