Serge, Whats going on Brotha!

Truecrypt is an open source encryption software. Here in the office since we are a large enterprise organization we use McAfee Endpoint Encryption to manage thousands of laptops and mobile devices.

I have played around with Truecrypt however, i have not toyed with an encrypted disk and backing up that disk on the cloud.

Carbonite I believe is the first to offer online backup solution. however, i prefer acronis online backup. they give you more space and it only costs $50 a year.

Believe it or not, and i do hate to admit this because im windows certified but one of the best backups i have seen in terms of perfomance is icloud.

Thanks buddy! I never tried iCloud. Carbonite seems ok and it is in the 50's if you sign up for two or three years with unlimited storage.

My main concern is opening a door to my computer.

Re. Truecrypt ... something like Dropbox monitors disk blocks so it will update those that changed on a virtual encrypted disk. I am not sure if Carbonite does that.

I think they do encrypt the data but on the server level not on a local level.

Yeah they do, but I would want to upload an encrypted file already (as you would create with Truecrypt).

Anyway, I think I'll just buy a couple drives and do it locally. I am too paranoid :)

Thanks dude!

Alfred, that is a fantastic gesture and a sign of the type of people who use this forum. It truly is a great place. It's no wonder people can spend so much time here. I hope I never need to take you up on your offer as IT problems can be a nightmare but it's great to know you would help me out should I ever need it.
Cheers

Alfred, I have a question regarding defragmentation.

My computer is scheduled to run a defrag one a week but yet it takes 1-2 Hr's to complete when I decide to do it manually?
Shouldn't it go faster if it was done just a couple of days prior?

I remember back then with the old systems you could follow the defrag in progress and physically see where it was and what it did.

Just saw this thread. As for backup, a little more involved but I would highly recommend you look into StorageCraft Shadow Protect. I backup servers and critical desktops with this image based backup including offsite replicated backup. The software also allows for hardware Independent Restore to alternate hardware of Virtual machines.

Mon - if you go to Computer > Properties of Drive > Tools > Analyze you will get some picrture on how to do it.

Alternately you can open a Command prompt "DOS Window" as Administrator and type "defrag c: -a" with no quotes and it will show you a basic dos analysis of the drive - to defrag from the DOS window, just remove the -a

Thanks for the tip but it doesn't work for me.
With Vista it doesn't give you the option of analyze like it did before.

Also my question was why does it take so long if it was defraged just a few days earlier?

Mon the best you can do is to format the disc and install Win7, Vista is the worst OS that MS ever made.

I do that to my laptop, it was just like get a new computer.

If you do it don't uppgrade to Win7, then you will have some bad stuff still in your computer. So it's a clean disc and a full version that you should have.

Oh, you have Vista. 90% of your (computer) problems are because you have Vista.

Seriously, the Vista filesystem is very slow for a number of reasons but gets better if you have Service Pack 2 installed. Right click on computer > go to properties > see which service pack is listed 1 or 2 . I intentionally do not have a Vista PC running to test with as i skipped it when ever possible and recommended to my clients to do the same.

Thanks Alfred but I already have a win7 disc that Patrick generously sent me but my problem is that I wouldn't know how to reinstall everything I have if I do a clean sweep.

No Worries Mon. you just need to pop the CD in and do an upgrade most of the time. or you can use windows backup to backup everything then do the clean install.

Make a list of your programs and make sure you have the install disc.

Mon - You should get a new computer and start fresh - you can access your one when needed....

Vista is Old - 5+ years. it is time. Vintage in the computerworld is not a good thing

How do I save a movie clip with an iMac (Aug. '12)? When I save it, the entire page gets saved, not the clip. When I access the clip, it opens in my browser (Chrome). Windows is so much easier - just right click and "save page as" and the clip is actually saved to your hard disc, but everything with a Mac is unnecessarily complicated!

Its not that MACs are generally complicated. Its just that we are used to Windows more than MACs.

There are many ways of doing this in a mac. are you talking about youtube videos or clips?

Hello Dan,

I if you dont mind that the OS is still Windows XP, I would suggest looking at the ZOTAC ZBOX or Acer Veriton.. they go fo $179 before but I have not seen them around lately.

Hmmm not seeing laptops in that link but barebones. Before Fry's sell those Nettop PCs or mini PC. now they are gone unfortunately but you can still find them in ebay. Gets an Acer Nettop its the most durable I have tested when I was working as a Sr. Ent. Sys Admin.
